Volunteers process and store food donated by the community at the Food Bank's 20,000 square-foot warehouse on Blaikie Ct. Every can and box of food is sorted and checked by experienced volunteers. All Faiths Food Bank trucks load up and deliver food to a network of more than 180 agencies and programs that offer hunger relief in Sarasota and DeSoto counties. All Faiths Food Bank also provides direc

t service programs including BackPack Kids, Cooking Matters and Growing Healthy Kids. We have a mobile pantry program which allows us to provide fresh produce, meat and dairy to communities at highest risk. The "rock star" of our organization is our Sprout Mobile Farm Market that brings garden-fresh fruits and veggies directly to neighbors in need.

After spending nearly 40 years in law enforcement, Nadine retired and began volunteering at her local food pantry.

“My drive to volunteer came from my dad,” Nadine remembers. “He was an activist in the sense that he wanted to help his community. When he wasn’t working, he’d be either going to a campaign rally or handing out leaflets – and I’d be with him.”

Nadine has been volunteering with the Feeding America network for the last three years. Every Tuesday, she helps visitors to the pantry pick out the food that best suits their needs and lifestyle.

New national reporting highlights something a lot of families don't realize is connected: SNAP and free school meals.

When a family loses SNAP, their kids can lose automatic eligibility for free school meals too. And when enough students in a school lose SNAP, the whole school can lose the ability to offer free meals to every student, not just the ones who qualify individually.

According to the article, up to 18.3 million students nationally could be affected this school year. For a family with two kids in school, losing free meals could mean over $2,000 more in food costs this year alone. Miami-Dade County Public Schools has already had to scale back its free meal program for this reason.

Neighbors count on SNAP for groceries at home and reliable meals for their kids at school.

At 65, Mary’s positivity propels her – even as she finds herself on a road she never imagined – health challenges, a recent divorce, and now, recovering from brain surgery.

Mary’s top priority is staying healthy and recovering. But for her and so many Sarasota and DeSoto county neighbors, affording food often isn’t possible.

Fresh produce, wholesome grains and nourishing proteins are the foundation of a balanced diet. For Mary, these foods mean even more. “Through eating nutritious foods and watching my diet, it will help keep my body healthier, so I don’t have to be in the hospital anymore,” she said.

“[All Faiths Food Bank] is providing me with the nutrition I need to recuperate from all this, and to hopefully be able to live a long, healthy life,” Mary added. “It’s just a blessing.”
