Last winter and spring we had a very severe drought and we have also felt the pressure of needing to increase prices. With less grass available to the cattle we have to use more hay and feed supplementation.

First it was eggs, now its beef.

This 2-week-old heifer is being bottle-fed because the cow's milk was a little late in coming in. Both cow and calf are doing fine now. A newborn calf has to be trained to do this. They will not naturally feed from a bottle.

Once in awhile we will get an alligator on our ranch. This guy was heading for the barn. He disappeared after a few days. They like to hang out in our pond. It's unusual to see an alligator this early before their mating season which is the summer.

We had two calves born the same night on 9/11/21. The white cow (CharolaisX) has a bull calf and the orange cow (LimosineX) has a heifer. Two births on the same day is a first for Green Pastures Ranch.

Pasture raised beef is the more environmentally sustainable method that we have used for years. Most of the environmental problems from beef that you see in this video are from the 'farming process'. But much of this process is related to the 'feed lot' model used for producing supermarket/restaurant beef. 'Land use' change is not the problem in the United States where agricultural acreage is undergoing development for housing and commercial use. On our ranch, rather than waste the protein in grass by mowing, we convert it into beef. If you like beef, consider the process used to raise it.

Avoiding high-emission foods can have a bigger climate impact than any other consumption change.Become a Video Lab member! http://bit.ly/video-labOur consump...

I am weaning (separating from the cow) the brown/orange calf that is six months old and keeping the yearling calf with her as a companion to help endure the ordeal. Calves are best weaned at about 6 months to help the cow prepare for her next calf with which she is already pregnant. To keep the older steer from eating the weaning calf's weaning feed, I have to separate the two or use a creep feeder. The opening on the creep feeder is low so that only the smaller calf can enter and leave. Both calves were sired by a brangus bull. The younger calf is out of a limousin crossed with a short-horn. The older calf is out of a black angus.

This 2 1/2 year old calf is being grain-fed for slaughter. Both sides have been reserved but we will have more beef available in the fall. It is not too soon to reserve a side of beef for the fall. Please send us an email for more information on pricing and how the process works. Visit our website at www.realbeefflorida.com.
