Respectfully Absurd Uni

Some nights are not for moderation.
Hokkaido uni.
Silk-soft.
Ocean-sweet.
No bitterness. No funk. No apologies.
Then the uni shots arrived —
raw quail yolk sliding into chilled sake like someone made bad decisions into a tasting menu.
Direct from Hokkaido.
Self-control ended there.
Negitoro.
Uni nigiri.
Wagyu.
A table that slowly stopped pretending restraint was the plan.

Just slow pours, glossy fish, and a reminder that sometimes the best meals are respectfully absurd.

Sushi Kami in Bradenton FL
Sushi is elegant.
But sometimes you want heat.
You want broth.
You want fried ama ebi heads and zero restraint.
That’s where Hot Plates live.
New category now live on The Stray Gourmet.

We stopped in at Anna Maria Oyster Bar in Bradenton for a late Saturday lunch — and it was packed (even without football on).
The crab cake salad looks thicker than it is, but it’s flavorful and perfect for lunch. The fried shrimp was a win. Friendly local vibe and lots of seating options.
Tip: Ask for the “Lighter Bites” menu from 11am–5pm.
If you’ve been, what do you order?
Street-tested. Curated. Stray.

This isn’t dressed up.
It doesn’t need to be.
Color. Gloss.
If you know—you know.

Not every experience is meant for everyone — and that’s okay.
This isn’t about being negative.
It’s about being honest.
Some things are someone else’s favorite.
These are not mine.

Kaiseki dining has officially arrived in Sarasota.
Yūgen is a Japanese chef’s counter offering a chef-led, fixed-menu kaiseki experience. Seating is prepaid, courses are curated, and the evening is designed around the chef’s progression — not customization.
This is not a review. I haven’t dined at Yūgen yet.
This reel is meant to help people understand what they’re booking before they reserve a seat.

If you want the full Tsunami (Lakewood Ranch) experience, skip the table.
Sit at the bar. Ask questions.
That’s where the magic happens.

Nothing was bad — but nothing made us stay.
I don’t expect restaurants to be cheaper than home. I expect them to do something better than my kitchen. This didn’t quite get there.
I’d eat it if I were here, but I wouldn’t send you.

Oysters, Cocktails & a Packed Bar at Lefty’s Seafood

Lefty’s Seafood was a solid find in Sarasota’s Rosemary District.
Oysters everywhere, cocktails that actually deliver, and a happy hour worth showing up for. We went early, but the bar filled quickly—and the full menu gives us plenty of reason to come back.

Hong BBQ and Hot Pot
Not every table is trying to be safe.
Hong BBQ keeps it fun, loud, and unapologetically OG.
