Calving Update
A couple weeks ago, Lily went into labor. We were extremely excited at the start but our excitement soon turned to worry. She ended up having a complicated delivery and despite all of our efforts the calf passed away shortly after being born. Needless to say, we were crushed by losing the calf but it was nothing compared to how Lily reacted.
We were fortunate enough to find a day-old bull calf within just a few hours and brought him into the barn. Lily immediately perked up and began calling for him. She adopted the new calf right away and has been a great mom to him ever since.
Unfortunately, the stress of the delivery and other factors led to Lily getting sick. She freshened with both milk fever and mastitis. We know Lily well enough to be able to catch both illnesses early and spent the first week treating her in every way that we could. I’m happy to report that she made a full recovery.
I want to extend our deepest thanks to family, friends, neighbors, local farmers, Lily’s former owner, and Leading Edge Vet. All of whom got her (and us) safely through the labor, delivery, and following sickness.
Here are some photos of Lily and her new calf, “Mr. Nibbles”.
