Goodnight cows. End of day move up to the backyard pasture. Yes, they’re excited. Yes, they’re vocal. Yes, when they p*e they gusher. 😂 Sunsets are mighty gorgeous here at Six Sons Farm. Nothing but the sound of crickets and chomping cattle. 💚💚💚

Got THAT right! And both are delicious in the right season. 💚

Fireflies are one of the many highlights of summer here on Six Sons Farm. A healthy population of them too, since we don’t apply any herbicides or pesticides on our land. 💚

Fireflies are known for their beautiful bioluminescence, but these helpful insects spend most of their lifecycle lightless and flightless, feasting on slugs, snails and garden pests like cutworms.

Many have already emerged in their flying form this summer and can be spotted in backyards and grasslands. Insecticide-free yards are much more likely to twinkle on hot summer evenings!

Have you spotted any fireflies this summer? Learn more and get involved with the Firefly Atlas by reporting firefly sightings at https://www.fireflyatlas.org/

Bottle calves are fed for tonight, temps are comfortably cool for man and beast, coyotes are howling nearby at the full moon, and all is right with the world here at Six Sons Farm. Thank you, Universe. 💚

We may be living in a 1/2-mile smoky bubble today, but the cattle already have full bellies, and are content to ruminate for a while.

Happy herd, more than ready for their end of day move to new pasture.

Back in the saddle again! After 5 weeks of post-surgery doldrums, Zeke FINALLY gets to join Dale again for farm chores—his "happy place!" Body harness and taut leash, to stabilize his healing leg.

Success! 💚 At least until the next calving. Sorry for the lack of farm updates. Calving hit and nearly everything went wrong for a while...cow rejecting calf, calf pneumonia, catching and trailering new mom-cows back to the farmyard to re-bond with healing calves, calling the vet for an emergency birth ON PASTURE (pulling the calf) out of a first-time heifer at 10pm on a holiday. And, of course, she rejected it after the trauma. 😭

SOOOO...after feeding and caring for several sick or orphaned calves in the barn, and more vet visits and phone calls, Dale's patience and long 16-hour workdays paid off. THANK YOU to Sunrise Veterinary Services, Reedsburg, WI and our friends and family who helped out on occasion, so we didn't completely lose our sanity!

📢📢📢 NOTE: This is NOT typical care for beef cattle, and we are not set up for routine calf feeding. Ideally, they are born on pasture and the mom takes care of them. We just had our first unlucky Spring.

Look at this handsome gentleman strutting down our country road today. He and his little lady have put down stakes in our east pasture, and we couldn't be happier. Since we've converted our cropland to grazing pastures, we've seen a resurgence in grassland birds...some that haven't been heard here for decades!

Check out our Birds of Six Sons Farm page to see the dozens of NEW species we've witnessed so far this year. (I've got a few more to add, but haven't had time yet...) https://www.sixsonsfarm.com/birds-of-six-sons-farm

A huge shoutout to our farmer-led SSWIG Sauk Soil & Water Improvement Group and its supporters for all the good work being done to keep farming sustainable and rural communities strong.

A great big thanks goes out to James Kaiser from Ramaker & Associates for their much appreciated spring donation to SSWIG's efforts in improving our local soil health and water quality! This generous donation will help put more conservation practices on more acres in Sauk County in 2026. Kudos to Ramaker and their "OWN IT" committee for bolstering important community building and support efforts such as this!
