Dunroven Farms, Sauquoit, NY....This is a real beauty, my photograph is from 12/18/12 at Christmas time. Google tells me very little about this one except that it is family-owned and operated. I know very little about this beautiful place...I do know that it's a fabulous place with three big silos and I like it! So, whatever you know, please comment ~ thanks in advance. When researching this one I came across a really interesting quote ~ it went like this ~ "Without farming, you would be hungry, naked, and sober.".....I love it when humor and facts like this are combined! God Bless our farmers...!! Have a great day, I will be back with another post later....going out for awhile and look for things to aim my camera at!!! .....Bob...all photos ©Robert Ostrander, all rights reserved.....by the way, it's quite warm here today!

DISCLAIMER: calf is fine!

One of the biggest complaints that Dairy Farmers get is that they remove the calf from the cow after or even before she’s done cleaning it off. THIS IS WHY!! This calf is about 15 minutes old. The cow didn’t finish licking it off before she laid down on it. Having good protocols for cows calving and our employees always keeping a close eye on them, prevented a tragedy! She has a very large maternity pen and she decided to lie down right there.
Calves can get stepped on, laid on, pooped or peed on. Dairy cows don’t always let them nurse to get the important colostrum they need. Dairy Farmers keep calves safe and make sure they get that colostrum to jump start their immune system. They aren’t born with an active immune system. Dairy cows don’t “cry for their calves”. They pretty much don’t care about them and trust their humans to take care of them. They want to get back to their herd mates as soon as they can and mooooove on with their day.

I think I speak for all dairymen that they want to see these kind of advertisements from their dairy check off dollars that they HAVE to pay in for, do better!!!
American Dairy Association North East

If you see our billboard on Commercial Drive, let us know!

Farmers want to SEE advertising of the products they produce. Dairy products are rarely advertised. That needs to change!

Happier cows live in New York! 😉😁

Day 12 of JUNE DAIRY MONTH:

"Nothing good comes from a fat or skinny cow." Dr. Mooney, SUNY Morrisville

Did you know that it's actually okay to see a DAIRY cows ribs, pins & hip bones? In fact if we weren't to be able to see them we would consider them to have "too much flesh/condition" on their backs. And metabolically it's not healthy, or she's on the above average level on energy balance for said cow. However, when a cow is ready to be 'dried off' (60 days of maternity leave, where she isn't making milk and before she calves) it's okay for her to have some condition on her, so that way when she has her calf she has some reserves to take from. But if you have a cow that is too thin or gaunt-looking, she too is not in a positive energy balance, and won't produce much milk in either extremes. That's why it's so important for cows to have good body condition so she is in a healthy state all around. I'll attach pictures of what I'm talking about.

DAY 11 of JUNE DAIRY MONTH!!!

Do you know if you're buying local? Do you know where to find out? Do you know what's in your milk cartons/jugs? I do, and I'll let you know! You can look up https://www.whereismymilkfrom.com/ and easily find out, but I can tell you quicker!
If you buy from your local grocery store and the milk jug/container will have an inked stamp on the outside. The first two numbers means what state it came from, for NY ours is 36! And then the last four digits means what plant it was processed from after leaving the farms. And this milk has been homogenized and pasteurized to make sure nothing bad is in thr milk for human consumption, also dairy products are some of the most regulated food product on the market today! So when you buy a pint/quart/half gallon/gallon from your local grocery stores, the only thing that's in your milk is naturally dairy milk and some added calcium to help keep your body strong and healthy! So now you know these facts and can go and impress your friends and family

DAY 10 OF JUNE DAIRY MONTH:

Here's some interesting facts for you all,

It takes 10 gallons of milk to make 1 pound of cheese! 🧀

It takes 3 gallons of milk to make 1 gallon of ice cream! 🍦

A cow could drink a whole bath tub of water every single day!

A heifer becomes a cow when she has her baby, which is when she has her first lactation!

NY state is the fourth largest dairy producing state nationally!

If you didn't know these facts, you do now and now you can pass them on to others!
