This is Cessna, from our youngest batch. She is an "Easter Egger", and was our Super Chicken in that group of 18- three different breeds. She was the first to fly- about 36" at a time, at 4 days old. She was the most friendly, and the first of her group to lay an egg- a very pretty green egg. I was hanging laundry this morning, and she cleared her fence to come visit me for some pets ❀️. I now keep them in their sizable runs for the morning hours, because there are so very many predators. Fencing is a mere suggestion to Cessna, though.

Aside from all the high fructose corn syrup and other nasty ingredients, have you guys noticed how hard inflation has hit candy? 🍫🍬🍭

We decided that it would benefit both our budget and waistlines to trade it in for "home curated" trail mix! I took a huge mixing bowl and dumped in:
Roasted sunflower kernels, dried blueberries, dried apples, dried pineapple, yogurt covered raisins, granola, tiny pretzel balls, and almonds. You can use whatever you like, though! I bought these at a local Mennonite store that sells a lot of bulk stuff, cost about $30 total. Divided it into 8 "almost quart" jars, at the final cost of $3.99 per jar. I put an oxygen absorber in each jar. If I wanted to store it longer than 6 months, I could use my food saver bags.

Chicken Little eating Jewelweed blossoms. Did you know that the average chicken has an equivalent IQ to a 4 year old child? They are trainable, can bond to humans, and can recognize up to 100 human faces.

Want to see the craziest Monday we have ever experienced? This was during bear mating season in June. I looked up from watering my chickens and saw that I was face to face with a bear cub hanging from a tree, like "what's up, lady?" Turns out, I was surrounded by 3 bear cubs and Mama wasn't far away πŸ˜…

Doug Update:
When he isn't working on completing his degree, Doug does "dirt and tree work", and diligently builds our wood pile for the winter (we are fully wood heated). He also keeps improving the property as well with better drainage, as we are on a side hill. Also, we keep and raise a lot of hens, and are up to 2 coops with a third in the plans. He has an ambitious goal of adding a flock of Katahdin sheep before the end of the month, and knowing him- that fencing will be up as soon as he has it in hand. Doug does miss talking to his customers, and the actual barbering work was very enjoyable to him. He keeps his license up, but where we live- there seem to be more bears than people, so we aren't sure if opening a barber shop would be a good prospect or not.
We appreciate all the kind words on yesterday's post, and hope that everyone is staying cool today.

I will save Doug for tomorrow 🀣
》I left Hairdressing 100%- I don't even color my own hair anymore, and I now work from home.
》I discovered natural fibers and their benefits, as I delved into a more "crunchy" lifestyle to try to improve my own health. I particularly love flax linen, wool, and organic cotton- and I soon found that these clothing items are not easy to find, so I started making them... and turned it into a business!

》I have a website, and I stay pretty busy with both that and the custom orders.
》Bras, Underwear, reusable items, aprons, skirts, pillowcases, pants, and one of my favorite things to sew is handbags 🧡πŸͺ‘
