Shearing an Appaloosa alpaca blanket

To safely shear an alpaca, we lay them on their side and gently restrain them to keep them still during shearing. The process only takes about 5 minutes, and after that they’re quickly back out into the pasture enjoying their summer haircut! The animal is not being hurt, and they are not sedated. Every alpaca needs to be shorn every year to prevent heat stroke and to keep them happy and healthy.

Quick announcement! Effective tomorrow, May 8th I will unfortunately have to temporarily raise my travel fee from $110 to $125 per farm for the remainder of the season due to the increase in the price of gas. I was hoping to avoid this, but with the price now being well over $4 a gallon it needs to be done. I hope my clients understand, and I will be reminding people of this change during my normal confirmation texts prior to your shearing appointment. If this change is not possible for anyone, please contact me directly and we can work something out. Cheers!

Shearing An Alpaca

Alpacas are shorn once a year in the spring to harvest their fiber and to prevent heat stress. This process is inherently stressful for the animal, so as professional alpaca shearers our job is to decrease the stress on the animal in every way possible.

It is key to shear quickly and efficiently while maintaining focus and prioritizing the safety of the animal throughout the shearing process which takes roughly five minutes per animal. We take great care to handle each animal with the minimum amount of force needed, while ensuring we get the job done.

This sweet cria was born just before we arrived to shear the herd, she was alert and well so we brought her to hang out by mom while she got shorn for the summer to keep them both calm!
