Lauren Melton Labra shares one of her favorite recipes for Sweet Potato and Black Bean Chili! She says - You can make it vegan by not adding sour cream, but in my family we typically add a little sour cream and shredded cheese. Serve alone or over a little rice, farro, or other whole grain for an even heartier dish! Lauren danced many roles over the years with Northeast Ballet including Fairy Godmother in Cinderella! She shares a few photos here!

Lucas Rodriguez shares his Galette de Rois (King’s Cake!)

This charming pastry is most appropriately served between January 6th (Epiphany/Twelfth Night) and Mardi Gras. The warmth and golden hue of a King’s Cake is symbolic of the sun’s return, as days steadily grow longer. Though there are countless variations on King’s Cake, this light, fragrant, frangipane-filled delight from Northern France is my favorite.

Lucas' favorite role: The Nutcracker
This ballet is sacred to me as it encapsulates the essence of festivity and magic. Fulfilling the title role meant so much to me simply because I was doubtful I could ever represent something so glorious. Furthermore, there are elements of the character that I clung to. Though steadfast and chivalrous, he is more complex than a cavalier. The Nutcracker must overcome peril to succeed in triumph. My physicality was never conducive for classical dance, yet here I was dancing a title role in a classical ballet. Though I saw myself as weak or emasculated, I proved to myself and others that I could be mighty. My technique may have been far from perfect, yet it was an utterly complete moment for me.

Two of my favorite roles with the company were the sugar plum fairy and when I had the opportunity to perform the beautiful night and day choreographed by Darlene Myers. I danced both roles with my fabulous partner Lucas Rodriguez. We had such a blast! I miss my northeast ballet family tremendously!! ❤️
