South Shore Seafood Exchange (SOSSEXI)

South Shore Seafood Exchange (SOSSEXI) A Community-Supported Fishery that provides fresh, local seafood caught by local small commercial fishermen to communities of South Shore, MA.

Our goals are two-fold: to nurture the relationship between the local fishermen and the surrounding communities and to allow local restaurants and residents access to this freshly caught native resource. We also offer education on fish and preparing it for meals. Featured Fishermen:
• Frank Mirarchi, owner of the Barbara L Peter
• Phil Lynch, owner of the Mary Elizabeth
• Kevin Norton, owner of the Yankee Rose
SOSSEXI is managed by the Friends of South Shore Seafood Development.

All reputable seafood guides are science-based, and yet can offer conflicting advice, because they have different goals. Some support sustainable fishers. Others aim to recover declining populations.

"Like other vexing food production problems, there's no easy answer for how to successfully redirect fish headed for fishmeal production toward our dinner plates instead. Cashion says large-scale change needs to be driven by governments, intergovernmental organizations and nonprofits that will promote food security through 'direct human consumption' of fish.

"Make it happen, he says, 'and there'd be more high-quality fish available to humanity as a whole.'"

Currently, one-fourth of all fish caught globally goes to produce fishmeal and fish oil for farmed seafood, pigs and chickens. A lot of it is "food grade" and could be feeding the world's hungry.

"I’m deeply grateful ... [to] local fishermen entrusted me with their stories... the little guy in Goliath fights and ... had to face closures that threatened their passions (and, for the fishermen, their livelihoods). Theirs were important stories to tell, and I’m thankful they let us." Well put, Ms. Funderburk. Thank you for taking the time to do the research and publish it, helping to raise awareness of the dire circumstances of our fishermen neighbors and the other important articles you have written. Good luck in DC!
