From tasseled corn in Texas to newly emerging corn in Kansas, the season is progressing in very different ways across the farm.

In Texas, the corn crop is further along and beginning to tassel, the stage where the plant starts forming ears and kernels. In Kansas, corn is still emerging through the residue left from last year’s crop.

That residue is part of our no-till stewardship practices. It helps hold moisture, reduce erosion, and protect the soil as the crop gets established through the summer months.

Even though the crops are at different stages, the focus stays the same. Make decisions that support the crop today while also taking care of the ground for the future.

There’s always a sense of excitement when the first combines start rolling, and you can definitely feel it as wheat harvest gets underway in Northeast Texas.

We’re thankful for the growing conditions that helped this crop develop and are excited to finally see the results of months of hard work in the field. Here’s to safe harvest days, good yields, and getting this crop across the finish line.

As corn planting and triticale harvest wrap up, we are thankful for the much-needed rain that moved across the farm yesterday.

Rain totals were variable, but every bit of moisture is welcome.

The rain helps set the planted corn up for a strong start and puts the ground in better shape for the next phase of the season.

Grateful for the moisture and ready to keep moving forward.

Scouting triticale for silage timing.

Checking heads, plant moisture, and grain development to determine the best time to start chopping. Yield and quality are inversely correlated. The earlier the crop is harvested, the higher the quality but the lower the yield.

Dairies typically want triticale harvested earlier, while the head is still in the boot stage, because forage quality and digestibility are at their peak. Beef feedyards, on the other hand, are generally more interested in maximizing tonnage, so they prefer harvest later, after heading when the kernels are mostly formed.

Regardless, there’s a narrow window where tonnage, moisture, and feed quality all come together. That’s what we’re looking for in the field.

Though social media tends to show the highlight reel, reality is more like an 80% chance of rain that turns into 0.03" of drizzle.

Years like this are why long-term farming practices, residue management, and soil health matter. We can't control the weather, but we can prepare the soil to soak up every single drop when rain comes.

So we keep at it, pray for El Niño to kick in, and wish we had a few more of these irrigation sprinklers right about now.

Passing down knowledge is at the core of what we do.

This week our summer intern crop scouts officially started at VFF, giving them the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience from our Agronomy Team.

Crop scouting is all about paying attention to the small details early — like newly emerging weeds — and making adjustments before small problems become bigger ones.

Some years hit wildlife harder than others, and that's especially true when there's a drought.

These newly hatched pheasants are part of our effort to help rebuild native populations by releasing birds into CRP corners across the farm. Those areas provide the cover and habitat they need to survive and grow.

This is one of those things that doesn’t show up on a yield map, but still matters to the future of our farm.

Keeping the planters supplied is just as important as the planting itself.

This is where all the continuous behind-the-scenes hard work matter. A lot goes into keeping things moving efficiently, and we're grateful for the people behind it all.
