Thank you to everyone who scooped up the dahlia bouquets. I only had a dozenish from a harvest yesterday. And apologies for the email this morning to buy what I don’t have. 😣 Stay posted for next week.

I’m finally releasing dahlia bouquets this week. Yiu will get an email if you get my newsletter. They are limited. Each bouquet features 7-8 stems for $30. Remember that dahlias only have a 2-4 day vase life. Change your water and snip stems for the best results. Thank you again for following and supporting my flowering. Yall are the best. xoxo Farmer Jess

I am so excited y’all. These potatoes were so heavy I strained by hip moving them. If you are new to following my circus, I’m Jess and tulips are my largest crop. I now know enough to exclaim these are the best tulip bulbs I’ve seen in years! They are flawless and got back! I have 25,000 on the way and am wrapping my head around this scale up. Get excited. I’ll bring the first girls to market late January. Thanks goodness for the new heated high tunnel. I’m going to need it.

The dahlias are starting to kick up a storm. Retail customers stay tuned this week. You’ll hear from me! It’s been a very slow fall start due to heat and drought. Now enjoy this pocketful of sunshine! 📸 Dahlias Sylvia, Linda’s Baby, Larkes Ebbe, Miss Amara. Chrysanthemum Prom King.

If I had to choose a favorite dahlia, it’s Orange Globe. The color is ridiculously bridgie (yes I’m coining that term) and she is huge and stout. I saw her 5 years ago at my friend Lori’s farm Lori Huster | Georgia Grown Dahlias and never forgot that I had to have her. I’m slowly building stock. She’s a me plant.

I had a plan this year to reduce the varieties of dahlias I grew to less than 10. I wanted varieties that produce well and that could be paired together blind plus a few dark horse contenders that I just like. My list was narrowed down to: Sylvia, Cornel Bronze, Miss Amara, Ferncliff Spice, Orange Globe, Valley Porcupine, Pineland Princess. The plan was mostly executed. I have some Cornel red that were mixed with Cornel Bronze. Found some HH Black Beauty and Labyrinth mixed in. Had extra space so I threw in some Coralie who mostly died. And then I planted a late hodge podge bed of second contenders who may or may not bloom. They include Manoa, Pink Pearl, Mystique who are all worthy in their own ways. And guess what? I may not even fall grow dahlia next year. But I may spring grow in my flashy new tunnel. There is always next year in farming.

Give me a bi-colored flower any day! Meet Pineland Princess. When I first grew her last year I thought she was sort of ugly. But then 1 plant bloomed her tail off as soon as the temps shifted a bit cooler. I guess her wild texture and blendable colors grew on me because of all dahlias I kept her in the line up.

I love the moments in farming where I’m proud of myself. Because they last for exactly 2 seconds. 🤣 And then something knocks you back into reality: pests, drought, blasting heat, tariffs, fuel costs, crop failure. Seize the small moments every day.

September has been brutal for dahlia growers. It’s one of the busiest months and this year the plants have been stingy in this heat and drought. Usually we have a temperature dip mid month and the 90s move on so the plants start hyper producing. Not this year. But there are some varieties that just want to flower. Miss Amara is one of my favorite and most reliable producers. As I slimmed down varieties she was at the top of my list. She started flowering a couple weeks ago and just keeps sending blooms. I love that the heat causes a buttery yellow which will soon turn more gold with lower temperatures. And who doesn’t love the plum dusting. She’s a must grow in the south. Fingers crossed we will see the stems flood in soon. It’s time. 📸 Dahlia Miss Amara
