The overall food insecurity rate in Lawrence County is 20.4%. The CHILD food insecurity rate is 27.1%. That means we are nearing 3 in 10 Lawrence County children being considered food insecure, and unfortunately, these numbers are growing.
Today I had the opportunity to attend Facing Hunger Foodbank’s Crowded Table Celebration and spend a couple of hours learning more about the work being done to address food insecurity in our region.
I left feeling both humbled and re-energized.
As someone who spends a lot of time thinking about community, creating events, and building spaces where people gather, it’s important to step outside my own perspective and stay familiar with the needs that exist within our community. Events like this are a good reminder that community isn’t simply about bringing people together. It’s also about making sure people feel supported, seen, and cared for once they’re there.
I’m grateful for the perspective and for organizations like Facing Hunger doing the hard work every day to make a tangible difference.
And lastly, shoutout to Eastham & Associates. I saw you listed as representing Lawrence Co, and I have mad respect for it.
