I saw this poster of watercolors from a company called Travel Treasures. The colors are named after places and symbols of Alabama and I thought what color would I add? I think I would begin with Alabama White Marble, Goosepond Grey, Mobile Mardi Gras, White BBQ Sauce and Auburn. What colors would you add?

Who remembers the WVOK’s Shower of Stars in Birmingham? I think the time I went it was in the old Boutwell Auditorium. Each event was a massive lineup of anywhere from 6 to 10 major national hit makers, which might include performers like Tommy James & The Shondells, Paul Revere & The Raiders, The Cowsills, Lou Christie, The Buckinghams, Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart, The 1910 Fruitgum Company, Pat Paulsen, Mark Lindsay, The Grass Roots, Tommy James, Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds, Lobo, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Herman’s Hermits, The Lovin’ Spoonful, Neil Diamond, Davy Jones & The Monkees, The Turtles, and Gary Puckett & The Union Gap. In my young, star-struck life, it was the pinnacle of coolness to get to go to the Shower of Stars. One summer my precious Daddy agreed to drive me and a group of my closest friends to Birmingham to the event. He walked in with a group of wiggly, screaming preteens, got us all to our seats, sat down and promptly fell asleep. I will never to this day know how he slept through the entire concert.
Well, Luanne and Chris got to have a flashback experience, but this time at the Ryman in Nashville. I’m so jealous. Their show included The Cowsills (still my favorites), Gary Puckett and the Union Gap (Young Girl), The Turtles (It Ain’t Me Babe), The Association (Cherish), The Vogues (You’re the One) and The Fortunes (Here Comes That Rainy Day Feeling Again). I haven’t gotten a post concert report on how many people in that audience fell asleep (or how many hobbled in with walkers)! Now, who else went to see The Shower of Stars?

I’ve found my new butter obsession. I’ll still cook and bake with Kerry Gold, but for spreading on a chunk of sourdough or topping off a steak or baked potato, this is what I’ll use. I can’t even describe the taste, but it’s somehow more….more creamy, more buttery. And the hand-harvested Guérande sea salt crystals actually add a teeny little crunch. It’s called Buerre de Baratte, which google tells me it translates to “churned butter”. With a fat content of 80%-82%, each block of this velvety butter from Normandy is shaped by hand. It is absolutely amazing.

I made these crispy tacos from tonight. I had pulled pork and green enchilada sauce, so I used that instead place of chicken and red enchilada sauce and they were really good and a lot easier than trying to keep everything inside the taco. If you try these, don’t skip the sauce. It made all the difference!
