🌼 The Wildflowers Are Popping at Knobstone Flower Farm! 🌼

Nature is putting on quite a show right now, and the wildflowers are bursting into bloom across the farm.

For our flower lovers, this is one of the best times of the season to create a unique wildflower bouquet filled with colors, textures, and varieties you won't find in a store. Wander through the blooms, pick your favorites, and we'll help arrange them into a beautiful bouquet to take home.

📸 For photographers, the wildflower fields are providing stunning natural backdrops with fresh blooms, vibrant colors, and beautiful evening light. Whether you're capturing family photos, engagement sessions, senior portraits, or simply enjoying the beauty of nature through your lens, the farm is looking better every day.

🦋 Along the way, you may spot butterflies, bees, dragonflies, and other pollinators hard at work among the flowers.

Reservations are required and available through our website:

Ode to the Pollinators

A buzz is in the air,
For the pollinators have been hard at work,
Spreading magic everywhere.

Busy as a bumble bee,
From first light until day's end,
They dance among the blooms they meet,
Beneath the warm summer heat.

The butterflies carry secrets on painted wings,
The bees hum songs from flower to flower,
While dragonflies glide like tiny jewels,
Keeping watch from their garden tower.

The sunflowers are standing tall and proud,
The wildflowers are putting on quite a show,
And the pollinators invite you to wander through,
Where beauty and wonder continue to grow.

So gather your friends, follow the blooms,
And leave your worries behind for a spell.
Plan your nectar visit soon,
And thank the tiny wings that help our gardens thrive so well.

🌻 Welcome to The Venue at Knobstone & Knobstone Flower Farm! 🌻

For our new followers, we'd like to introduce ourselves. We are David and Lisa Coates, owners of a beautiful 35-acre farm in Southern Indiana featuring flower fields, a three-acre lake, a rustic one-acre pond, and breathtaking countryside views.

What started as a new adventure during the pandemic has grown into something truly special. Our goal has always been simple: to share the joy that flowers bring to people. Thanks to your support, we are now celebrating our seventh season!

Today, Knobstone Flower Farm is part of The Venue at Knobstone, where guests enjoy u-pick flowers, photography sessions, weddings, special events, and peaceful moments surrounded by nature. Over the years, we've added a rose garden, expanded perennial plantings, additional flower fields, and our beloved Grain Bin Gazebo overlooking the flowers and water.

We are open seasonally from mid-May through mid-October by reservation. Reservations help us coordinate around weddings and events while giving us the time needed to plant, care for, and continually improve thousands of flowers for our guests.

Whether you're visiting for flowers, a special event, or simply a relaxing evening in the countryside, we look forward to welcoming you to the farm.

FIRST ZINNIA SEEDS PLANTED!

At Knobstone Flower Farm, we wait until the soil has properly warmed before planting zinnia seeds because zinnias are a true warm-season flower. While it may feel tempting to plant early in spring, cool soil temperatures can dramatically slow germination, weaken seedlings, and delay blooms for weeks.

Zinnia seeds thrive when soil temperatures consistently reach around 70°F or warmer. In colder soil, the seeds often sit dormant, struggle to sprout evenly, or become vulnerable to rot and disease. Even if they do germinate, cool conditions slow root development and early plant growth, meaning the flowers actually take longer to reach their beautiful summer blooms.

Over the years, we have experienced and documented in our flower journal that the second and third week of May consistently works best for starting zinnias here in Southern Indiana, Zone 6B. This timing allows the soil to warm naturally while avoiding the setbacks that often come with planting too early in the season. This year, we planted our first zinnias on May 15th as the soil temperatures and weather conditions aligned for strong germination and healthy growth.

By waiting for warm soil and stable temperatures, we give the seeds the conditions they naturally love:

Faster and more even germination
Stronger root systems
Healthier plants with better disease resistance
Earlier and more abundant blooms overall

In Southern Indiana, patience in the spring often leads to far better flower fields in the summer. A zinnia planted too early may survive, but a zinnia planted in warm, welcoming soil will thrive.

Yesterday, Lisa and I tucked 1,200 new gladiolus corms into a fresh flower bed on the farm — a little patch of promise for seasons to come.

One of the most magical parts of growing these beauties is their resilience: nearly 90% of the gladiolus we’ve planted over the past few years have wintered over and returned stronger than ever.

With every row we plant, the farm feels a little more colorful, a little more hopeful, and a little more alive. We can’t wait to enjoy an even longer season filled with these towering blooms and their endless parade of color!
