We got a for the herd!!!
Meet Bandit! He was trained by the prisoners at Florence Prison and then worked for 12 years before he fractured his leg and needed to be retired. We are incredibly grateful for this new member of our herd and can’t wait to see how he steps into the arena this fall. He’s already worked a healing event in the arena and has shown deep intuition working with and .

There is a way to save these wild symbols of freedom and a purpose for them and we are behind these efforts to rescue, rehome and give purpose.

We can’t do this without the support of our donors to help us take the best care of this herd. If you’d like to support Bandit for the fall season, click the donation link in Bio 🙏 Our goal is to raise $6000 to cover his feed, board, vet care and supplements through next spring. Can you welcome him and help support?

Watch Spud’s wellness routine put ours to shame. 🛁🐷

During the hot summer months, keeping our animals cool and comfortable is an important part of daily care at Hunkapi. Fresh water, fans and misters help our animals stay cool when temperatures rise, and Spud gets a refreshing soak as part of his own summer routine. 💦

Every animal at Hunkapi has different needs, and our team makes sure they have the care, nourishment and resources they need to thrive. From the horses who take part in our programs to the animals who call the farm home, their wellbeing is part of the daily routine.

Your support helps provide the food, care and resources our animals need to continue being part of the healing that happens at Hunkapi. 🌾

🐴✨ Horse Spotlight: Phoenix

Phoenix’s story is a reminder that what makes us different can become our greatest strength. 🤍

Rescued from a kill pen in California, Phoenix found his way to Hunkapi and quickly showed that his unique perspective was something truly special.

With one eye and limited vision, Phoenix has developed an incredible ability to connect with some of Hunkapi’s most vulnerable participants. His calm presence and gentle nature help create a sense of trust and connection with individuals throughout Hunkapi’s programs, including children who are visually impaired.

What some may see as a limitation has become Phoenix’s superpower. He reminds us that potential does not always come from what we can see. Sometimes, it comes from patience, understanding, and the ability to meet someone exactly where they are.

We’re grateful to ABC15 Arizona for sharing Phoenix’s story and highlighting the powerful connections that happen between our herd and the people we serve.

After a week on the beach and in the classroom training on trauma and walking people through near death experiences, I beelined to the mountains to spend some time with the herd. I’ve missed our nightly tuck ins and I think they did too. Here’s a little magic that I caught under an August sky. I can’t wait for you all to meet Pearl 🐮. She was going to be sent for 🥩 but the dairy decided to gift her to us instead. She’s curious and playful and kind and was the sprinkle on top to an enchanted evening. We can’t save them all, but those we can will have the best life and tuck ins 🩵.

A child’s perspective says so much. 💫

During a horse camp this summer for children of first responders, one camper shared what it feels like to have a parent who serves others. She talked about how proud she is of her dad for helping people as a police officer and how hard it can be when he has to be away.

At Hunkapi, these moments give children a place to feel understood and supported. Through time with our animals, they can build connections, explore their emotions, and experience the unique bond that happens between humans and horses.

She shared that she loves learning about our animals and believes horses are extraordinary because they have their own way of showing love. It is that quiet connection that makes these experiences so meaningful.

A special thank you to Scottsdale Charros for sponsoring our children of first responders camp and helping make these moments possible.

While this summer’s horse camps have come to a close, Hunkapi continues to support our community through equine-assisted services, including programs that provide connection and healing for children, families, and first responders. 🕊️

Some of the biggest breakthroughs happen without saying a word. 💙

A child doesn't have to explain everything they're carrying. The horse already notices.

Horses are deeply aware of the energy around them. They respond honestly to what they see and feel, giving children gentle, real-time feedback without judgment. In that quiet connection, children often begin to recognize their own emotions, take a deeper breath, and discover a sense of calm they didn't know they had.

What starts as a child simply standing beside a horse can become a moment of trust. Then confidence. Then the realization that they are capable of more than they believed.

Healing isn't always loud. Sometimes it looks like a quiet moment, a gentle nuzzle, and a child who leaves feeling just a little lighter than when they arrived.

🎒 Back-to-school season can bring excitement, but it can also bring worry.

For many children, walking into a new classroom or starting a new routine can feel overwhelming. Those feelings are real, and having simple tools to work through them can make all the difference.

In a recent feature with AZ Family's Your Life Arizona, Hunkapi Founder and Executive Director Terra joined host Darrell J. Cunningham to share two mindfulness techniques that help children feel calm and present. One is box breathing, a simple breathing exercise that helps settle the nervous system and ease anxiety. The other is an orienting exercise where children look around the room and notice different colors. It gently brings their attention back to the present instead of focusing on anxious thoughts.

The power of the breath is something we often overlook, yet it can help children slow down, feel safe, and face the day with a little more confidence.

Thank you to azfamily 3TV CBS 5 for sharing these helpful strategies and shining a light on children's emotional well-being during the back-to-school season. 🍎

At Hunkapi, our volunteers are the heart behind so many of the moments that happen on the farm. 🧡

They show up because they care deeply about our animals and want to be part of their journey. Each horse is paired with a dedicated volunteer who takes the time to build trust, understand their personality, and create a meaningful connection.

For our volunteers, it’s not just about helping with daily tasks. They support the farm in many ways, from feeding animals and leading horses for therapeutic riding to gardening and serving as sidewalkers during sessions. Every role helps create a safe and supportive environment for our animals and participants.

We call our volunteers Catalysts for Change because the time and care they give help make the Hunkapi mission possible. Their dedication creates a place where animals and people can continue to heal and connect.

There are many ways to get involved at Hunkapi, including volunteering on the farm, joining a committee for upcoming special events or participating in a corporate volunteer opportunity. No previous horse experience is needed. If you have a love for animals and want to make a difference, there is a place for you at Hunkapi.
