It can help provide one of our horses with hay and/or grain three times a day for an entire month.

Our horses are at the heart of so many of the connections and experiences that happen at Hunkapi. Each horse at Hunkapi provides 500 session each year! Taking care of them is an essential part of taking care of the people they serve. 🥰

In Somatics we believe that all beings have everything inside of themselves to heal; that the body has done whatever it has needed to, maladaptive or not, to stay alive. And when we take time to investigate and get curious about these adaptive responses we get the opportunity to learn what has kept us alive, what fight has guarded our heart, what flight has created the distance we need for safety, what freeze has numbed us to unbearable pain. We get to learn if those trapped and patterned responses are still serving us and what are not - and we get to be guided through their release. They’re held in another’s presence and give permission to move, unravel, unwind and heal.

“You have everything inside of yourself to heal” is what I’ve whispered to him a million times since his arrival.
“You are strong. You are athletic. You are capable. I believe you. I see you.”

I only know what his scars suggest to me of tethers and whips and rooes and I can get lost in the pain and loneliness he has felt or see it and tell him he has capacity to heal.

He’s healing. He’s brave. He’s loving. He’s making one step at a time up this mountain.

This is Aurelius. This is his story and we love him so deeply for it. May his life be of benefit to all 🩵

From therapeutic riding and equine assisted life skills to emotional regulation, recovery support, first responder services and team building, each experience is shaped around the people who walk through our gates.

Some moments are difficult to put into words. They simply make you feel. 🤎

Before graduating from Hunkapi, one young participant wanted to say goodbye to Zippy, a horse he had formed a deep bond with.

When he reached Zippy’s stall, Zippy slowly stretched his neck through the opening and gently rested his forehead against the boy’s.

No treats. No asking for attention. Just stillness.

As tears fell, the boy thanked Zippy and told him how much he would miss him. Zippy closed his eyes and let out a long, steady breath, as if he understood every word.

It was a quiet moment, but one that said so much.

These are the moments that remind us of the healing, love and growth that can happen when horses walk alongside us through our journeys. 🐴🤎

Some connections don’t need words. They just need to be felt.

Behind every session, every connection, every moment of courage and every smile at Hunkapi is a team of people making it possible. 🤎

We call them Catalysts because they help create the moments that make Hunkapi what it is. From caring for our farm and animals to supporting therapeutic sessions, they give their time, energy and heart to help our participants experience connection, growth and joy.

Rodeo Without Limits brought together riders, families, volunteers, horses, and our community for a day full of connection, courage, and plenty of Western spirit earlier this month. 🤎🐴

🏡 Welcome home, Hunkapi herd! 👏

After spending the summer enjoying cooler days up north in Flagstaff, the entire herd is officially back at the farm! We couldn’t let their return go by without a big celebration. 🎉

Volunteers were ready to welcome them home with grooming, pampering, scratches, and plenty of love. It was a special day to celebrate these incredible horses and show them just how much they mean to our Hunkapi community. 🌵🫶

At Hunkapi, “we are all related” is more than the meaning behind our name. It’s a reminder of the connection and responsibility we share with one another. That includes the horses who do such meaningful work for our community. Their health and well-being matter deeply to us. We want every horse to feel cared for, comfortable, and to receive the support they need to thrive.

There’s nothing quite like having the whole herd back together. Welcome home, horses. 🥰

It takes a village to make Hunkapi what it is. 🤝 ✨

Our volunteers are a huge part of that village, and we’re incredibly grateful for the time, energy, and care they bring to the farm. Day after day, they help care for our horses, support our programs, and contribute to the many things that keep Hunkapi moving.

For Laurie, that includes caring for Phoenix. Brushing and grooming are part of the hands-on work that helps keep our horses healthy and cared for, while also creating opportunities to build trust and understand each horse’s unique personality.

Every volunteer brings something different to Hunkapi, and together, their contributions make a real impact. From supporting therapy sessions to caring for the animals, helping around the farm, and everything in between, the work our volunteers do helps create the experiences and connections that happen here every day.

To all of our current volunteers: thank you for being such an important part of Hunkapi. We couldn’t do what we do without you. 💙

And if you’ve been thinking about getting involved, there’s always room for more people in our village. No previous horse experience is required, just a willingness to learn and lend a hand.

🐴 Horse Spotlight: Phantom 🤎

Phantom’s story began somewhere very different from Hunkapi. He was rescued from a Texas kill pen alongside 2 of our other herd members, Presley and Patrick, by a California nonprofit called All Seated in a Barn before finding his way to our farm.

When Phantom arrived at Hunkapi, he was anxious, jittery, and carrying a lot of emotional trauma. Learning that he was safe took time. Today, his journey has become an important part of the work he does with our program participants.

Phantom primarily works in ground exercises and partner-based somatic therapy. As people spend time with him, they can observe his responses and learn to notice their own. His story creates space to explore fear, regulation, and what it feels like to slowly become more comfortable in the present moment.

There’s something powerful about watching Phantom learn that he is safe. Trauma recognizes trauma. Seeing his progress can remind people that fear is a response, not a weakness, and that feeling safe can be learned.

Phantom’s journey is still unfolding, just like the journeys of the people he works alongside. And every step toward trust is worth celebrating.
