In Memory of Lucy Whittier
The Arabian horse world has lost one of its truly remarkable breeders and horsewomen with the passing of Lucy Whittier.
Through her renowned Las Colinas breeding program, Lucy became known for her exceptional eye for quality and her unwavering appreciation for the Arabian mare. She was a world class collector of some of the breed’s most beautiful and valuable mares, assembling a group that would make nearly any breeder envious. These stunning mares became the foundation of a thoughtful and influential breeding program that produced generations of beautiful, athletic, and accomplished Arabian horses.
Her legacy also extends far beyond the horses she bred. Lucy’s extraordinary generosity to the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine established the Lucy G. Whittier Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, where critically ill and premature foals receive advanced, around the clock care from specialists in equine internal medicine and critical care.
The Lucy G. Whittier Endowment for Equine Perinatal and Infectious Disease continues to support improved medical treatment for newborn foals and their dams, along with vital research into infectious diseases affecting foals. Through this remarkable gift, Lucy’s compassion and commitment will continue to save and improve the lives of horses for generations to come.
