Episode 5: Jolene
The Mother of the Coop
Every flock has that one hen.
The one who seems to believe that every baby she sees is her responsibility.
For us, that hen is Jolene.
Jolene came to the homestead with Fancy, but it didn't take long for her to make her own place here. She has never needed an invitation to become a mother. When babies need raising, Jolene is there.
She has hatched and raised babies, protected them, and taught them how to be chickens. And she doesn't always do it alone.
Jolene has worked alongside Reba more than once, with the two of them sharing the job of raising and protecting a brood. They know their strengths, they know their weaknesses, and somehow they make it work.
That's Jolene.
She doesn't just raise babies.
She raises them with purpose.
She's protective without being needlessly aggressive, nurturing without being helpless, and when she decides a baby belongs to her, you'd better believe she means it.
Over the years, so many little lives have started beneath Jolene's wings.
And that's why she isn't simply one of the hens in our flock.
She's The Mother of the Coop.
