River Bend Family Farm Sharing the beauty & bounty of our family farm in SouthCentral Kentucky. Farmstays*Cut Flowers*Workshops*Special Occasion Flowers

With the original purchase of 142 acres, a long term dream was realized. David and Michelle have spent the last twenty-five years working in agriculture, but never on their own farm. Sharing the beauty and bounty grown on this special place is their vision. In addition to the cut flower business, River Bend offers farm stays and special events.

Today’s adventure: Releasing quail into the CREP ground. I love getting to do this with my favorite guy. Time outdoors with him makes me happy.

I’m having a moment tonight. A moment where I am just so grateful to be where I am, pursuing the dream of running my own flower farm, surrounded with people who love and support me and get their hands dirty helping me, and then share supper with me.❤️❤️❤️
Those are caterpillar tunnels. With my little flower babies tucked safely inside tonight, so no fear of frost❄️. A year ago, when I first whispered this idea I’d been carrying around that I wanted to grow and sell flowers, building a caterpillar tunnel seemed impossible. It has been a year of learning...with lots of learning how not to do it the next time.🤣
It has taken me all week to get all of the parts ready, from bending the EMT conduit, to learning to tie bowlin knots with JD, my renaissance man, to pounding 120 stakes two feet into hard Kentucky clay. But today I had a team to help assemble them, because this is most definitely a team sport. 👩🏻‍🌾🤣
We finished them just in time to enjoy seeing them glowing on our hillside at sunset.
Sometimes it really does take a village. I’m the one who whispered that dream, but it is my love who always says yes to my crazy ideas and helps me find a way to make them into reality. And it is my most amazing friends who don’t just encourage, but jump in and get their hands dirty with us, and then there is always the fabulous food shared between us! 😘Indeed it does take a village and I’m so thankful for the special people in mine! @ River Bend Blooms

Today I’m showing you how I get my plant plugs shipped in. Each box holds three trays and most of these trays have 216 tiny plants in them. 🌱
I am learning to start my own seeds in my basement with lights, but some plants are difficult to germinate or slow growing so it is a better use of my time to buy the plant plugs.

Once I receive the plants, they need to be planted into the prepared bed within a few days, one plant into each of the holes in the landscape fabric that you saw me making in the earlier video. Unfortunately, these plugs came in during that 95+ degree week in September and these are all plants that like cool weather, so that was stressful on them. But they are growing and doing well now that it has cooled down.

I’m going to share a few behind the scenes videos and pictures this week so you can see the infrastructure I’m working on to build a cut flower farm so you can buy local flowers next year!!! 💐
I use the landscape fabric to help prevent weeds and it helps maintain moisture. After working the ground, I lay my drip irrigation lines, then place the fabric over the top and secure. Each of my rows are 100 feet long. I’ll share more tomorrow.👩🏻‍🌾

We are coming to the end of my “learning” season. Everything else has been put under to make way for all of the fall planting, but I just can’t let these beauties go.
💐
Zinnias are one of my favorites. They take me back to time spent talking flowers and walking beds with my Grandma Swi. She started this whole thing I have for flowers.
💐
Anyone else love zinnias? What is your favorite color? I can’t get enough of the Queen Series.
