We spent the weekend in the hoop house getting our tomato plants pruned and re-clipped to their trellises. Removing the "suckers" ensures every plant puts its energy into growing massive, sun-ripened fruit rather than extra leaves or vines. It’s tedious work, but this method keeps our plants healthy, happy, and easy to harvest come peak season. Can’t wait for that first summer 🍅!

Yesterday the Side Step welcomed its FIFTH and final calf of the season, Penstemon. Similar to Tilly, this was Honey’s first ever calf and she’s been doing great with her little bull.

That ends calving with 4 bulls and 1 heifer!

The Side Step welcomed TWO more bull calves today from Lady Liberty and Kit! Both Patriot and Payday were born within the same hour and right on the fence line. You’ll notice we had to return Kit’s back into the calving pasture!

Continuing our FIRSTS here at the Side Step with Tilly having her first ever calf yesterday afternoon. Welcome to the world, Pru! Excited to see this little heifer grow up to be a pretty as her momma.

Celebrating many FIRSTS today as we welcome Percy! He is our first calf of the season who happens to be the first bred at the Side Step and Maverick’s first as herd sire.

We’ve been eagerly waiting for a special Side Step introduction… Happy 1st Birthday, MARPAT!

Over the past year, this WKC Australian Kelpie has quickly become the heart of our farm. The perfect combination of working intelligence, unwavering loyalty and strong cattle instincts - earning respect from even Maverick the bull!

We could not be more proud of our “Ute buddy” who comes to work everyday “just happy to be alive”. Whether it’s a day watching livestock, planting vegetables, tractor driving or enjoying the beach, he’s always there to please. Couldn’t imagine our operation without him!
