Mama hen has been trying for a couple weeks to teach her chicks how to roost. She would jump/fly up and they would run around frantically chirping until she finally would give up and jump back down to keep them warm at night. Tonight they finally got brave enough to try it.

This Hen surprised us with some babies. She hid in a corner of the coop we couldn’t see and hatched some eggs. We’ve never had a broody hen hatch eggs successfully until now. A great surprise!!

Glad to have our cows out of the barnyard and out on pasture. We finished up our fencing this week. 2 acre pasture for them hoping that will be enough through the summer for Daisy and Lilly.

Continued low egg production. Here is an example of a hen that is molting. She looks rather disheveled, but she is simply losing feathers as new ones are growing in. This happens a couple times/year.

Egg production has slowed down a lot. Much more so than anytime in the last 3 years of having our flock. Several hens are moulting which is when they grow new feathers. Their energy goes into that rather than producing eggs. You can tell when a hen is moulting because they look rather disheveled. Hens also lay eggs less frequently as the hours of daylight decreases. Hopefully soon they will pick back up again until then we have few eggs to sell.
