Every flock has at least one bird with an official name, a barn name, and the name somebody yells when she is somewhere she should not be.

The trouble starts when three names might be the same bird.

"Was Pancake the one that limped?"

"No, Pancake is the gray one."

"They are both gray."

"That is not helping."

This is where flock records get weird. The detail feels tiny when it happens. Two weekends later, it becomes a family argument in front of a chicken who refuses to clarify anything.

Drop the bird name situation you would have trouble explaining to a normal person.

Paper is not the problem. Outgrowing paper is.

Paper works for a while.

A notebook on the counter. A few names. A couple egg counts. A note about who started laying or who needs watching.

Then the system starts spreading out.

One note is in the notebook. One reminder is in your phone. Feed receipts are in the truck. Egg counts are on a calendar.

None of that means you are doing it wrong. It usually means the flock got bigger than the system.
