Sunday morning musings at the Bakery

My youngest squiddo turns another year older today, and I won't pretend I'm not a little emotional about it. These kids grow up fast, Mer-Friends. Faster than you're ever ready for.

It feels fitting as we celebrate him to remember a full circle moment with one of our favorite artists. Long before this bakery existed, we found a image online and fell in love with her work. I did a reverse image search, found her, and bought a print of the image for his nursery. We hung it on the wall and have watched him grow up under it. Now her art and her books are front and center in our gift shop, where new families find them every single day, and begin the same process with their own kiddos. 🥰❤

Okay, I'm not crying, you're crying. Moving on.

If you need something to sweeten your Sunday, we have you covered. Our Bavarian Cream crabs are here - scratch-made pastry cream inside a fresh scratch-made donut. One bite and you'll forget all other donuts exist... At least until you try our Cookie Butter Starfish, or our Nutella Milk Donut, or our Lemon Cream Snail, or our Cookies & Cream Milk Donut, or our whales, or...

Today's soup is our roasted red pepper tomato with a hint of smoked gouda. Smoky, hearty, and the kind of thing that feels like a hug from the inside. It's the perfect dipping soup, and our new meatball marinara puff pocket enthusiastically volunteers for the job.

Happy Wednesday, friends!

We love to mix things up around here, and the soft serve is doing something extra special this week. Huckleberry Cheesecake has joined our classic Chocolate, and it tastes like summer decided to show up and be its best self. Bonus points: it makes a dreamy float or sundae too.

Now, about the Cherry Limeade crabs- we know they have a certain unhinged energy. Their little claws are up and their eyes say "don't test me," but their flavor says "you know you love me." They are delicious, and the Mermaid will defend them with her whole heart.

On the gift shop front, we have very exciting duck news! The micro duckies have been fully restocked with dozens of unique designs (kitties & puppies & unicorns & mermaids & dinosaurs & gnomes & ladybugs & sharks & dragons & and...), then this afternoon we're unleashing a brand new flock of full-size ducks - disco ball, medical professionals, farmers, bookworms, woodland creatures and so many more. Over 100 unique full-size duckies, ready to find their people. It's basically a duck parade over here, and everyone is invited.

It's that time of year again- our annual reminder that we don't mix politics and business.

You will never catch us using this page to debate tax rates, foreign policy, or the domestic product export market. (Mostly because we are too busy making donuts, but also because that is not what we are here for.) But here is the thing: at Chubby Lil Mermaid, we don't consider human rights a political issue.

All humans deserve to live with dignity and have the same basic protections. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness (and honestly, a really good pastry while they're at it).

All humans. LGBTQ+ humans. Humans with differing skin tones. Female humans. Minor humans. Humans who identify as a gender different from the one assigned at birth. Humans who were born in other countries. Humans who put pineapple on pizza (yes, the Mermaid is one of *those* people!)

All. Humans.

So no, we don't mix business with politics here- because making sure every person feels safe and valued should never have been a political issue in the first place and because a world- and a bakery- made up of different people, perspectives, and experiences is a richer, more delicious one.

Good morning Mer-friends! The tides are rolling thru with some seriously good things today, and your Mermaid crew is ready to make this a Saturday worth getting out of your PJs for.

First, two of your most-requested treasures have resurfaced: our lemon cream cheese cookies are back in the case, and our soft sourdough bread has made its glorious return. All that gorgeous tang and flavor of sourdough- without the hard crust that turns your mouth into a shipwreck. You know you want it.

Speaking of glorious, the donuts came out extra chonky this morning, and we are not mad about it. Poofy, pillowy, perfect. Might we suggest a strawberry cheesecake or pina colada starfish? A Bavarian cream crab? One of our legendary apple fritters? Here is a wild idea: grab one of each and share with a friend!

These brown butter sugar cookies have designs that are cheerful enough to brighten even the foggiest Oregon morning, and the flavor? Even better.

Now, a word from your sleep-deprived Mermaid: she may have listed tomato soup on the menu story this morning. She was wrong. (The sea is humbling.) Today's soup is our award-winning clam chowder. Tomato gets its moment tomorrow.
