Now that I have had five years to learn & hone in on growing annual cut flowers, I've taken an interest in learning & growing perennial shrubs & flowers. Hellebore are a new favorite that often emerge through snow in the late winter. They love the shade & are great garden partners with daffodils, muscari, hyacinth, & snowdrops.

This will be season 5 of my small-scale cut flower farm & each year I work to make needed changes or upgrades from the previous year. Although I still use the soil-blocking method for some of my seed varieties (as it requires no plastic seed trays), this year I wanted a more sustainable option to the flimsy (one or two-season use) plastic seed trays that I still use for some seed varieties that are picky about their homes when starting out. This winter I invested in some extra thick BPA-free & food-safe plastic seed trays that are made here in the Midwest.

I started seeding for this coming growing season, in January & will continue seeding through early summer. This year I will be growing more than I ever have- and some of the most amazing color palettes that are rare & hard to find.

Also new for me this year, I have been learning more about seed saving & I plan for this growing season to be my first for saving seeds (and isolating varieties so no cross-pollination occurs) across varieties. It's going to be a fun season 🤍

Right now is the best time to be planning for this upcoming season's garden. I've been taking advantage of the snowed-in days & organizing seeds, planning my raised beds, & updating my 2026 offerings.

It's easier these days after 5 solid years of trial & error, learning what works & what doesn't- especially when it isn't your full-time job. To help other small growers like I was when I started out, I created a beginner's guide to direct-seed sowing of Cut Flowers 🌻

This is guidance & clarity I wish I had when I started growing cut flowers. No seed trays or grow lights needed. And no guesswork. Just proven varieties of seeds from 7 Cut Flower types. The guide includes a raised bed plan, planting guidance, & how-to pages on watering, cutting, & building simple bouquets. Check my bio for the 🔗 link.
