Cuddled up to Mama (Kaikoura) all nice and warm. I use a calf hutch, filled with straw, attached plastic flaps on the entrance to reduce wind, and I attached a Kane heating mat to the back wall for some safe radiant heat during these sub-zero temperatures.

Nature’s mood ring.

If the tom’s head is Red, White, and Blue (like this photo) it is an indication that he is feeling confident and dominant; Can you envision the strut that goes along with this photo?

If he is more red, he is showing fear/submission. The only time Jerry-the-Jerk looks like that is when I have to tackle him and bodily force him to submit and acknowledge that I am the dominant “Tom” of the flock.(I do this anytime he postures toward myself or my girls, we dont like jerk/dominant roos or toms around here)

Royal Palm Turkey (hen), she is one of my “velociraptors”. I so enjoy listening to the turkeys converse. They have a wide range of noises they use to communicate, and their “puts” are my favorite.This sound is used to alert the flock to a stranger/predator, it sounds like a question given their body language and I feel it is used as an alert along with curiosity.

Proud of myself, I set-up two farrowing pens this weekend in preparation for litters expected in June.
I just have to have to add mounds of fresh hay for the sows to make their nest with.
