“The Unknown Bottle” dated 2006 or earlier, green glass and delicious wine, blend unknown.

Pulled this from our cellar last night, with no indication of what was actually in the bottle. Whatever it was, it was delicious and still showing beautifully!

Virginie Boone's (of JebDunnuck.com) reviews of our 2022s are out and her Bel Canto review is incredibly complimentary:

Winemaker Ben Smith really likes Cabernet Franc, and the 2022 Bel Canto shows his deftness with the grape, where he’s blending 92% Cabernet Franc (upping it from 89% in the 2021) with 8% Merlot from Cara Mia Vineyard. Herbaceous, textured, and full of tension, it evokes Pomerol at its best, with an Old World soul of lovely refinement and a bite of tannin and to***co on the back of the palate. This is elegance squared. It’s one to age and enjoy 2028-2040.

Thank you Virginie!

Last night Gaye and I poured a vertical of our Ciel du Cheval blend for our tasting group. These are my thoughts on a wonderful evening: The winners of the night were the 11, 05, and 99, with opinions split on which was favorite. The younger bottles simply need more time to mature. There were no bottles remotely dead and we agreed even the 99 had a full decade or more of wonderful life in it. It's incredible to think the best of the bunch are 40 years wines and all, regardless of vintage, will easily go 25+ years improving all the while. Our 2005 was easily the equal of the Canon la Gaffeliere, showing more red fruit, that ineffable Washington juiciness, with equal complexity and structure. In other words we can hang with one of the best of St Emilion. The 1999 Andrew Will Ciel Cabernet Sauvignon was also in a delightful place. Gorgeous wine. It blows me away that a few vaunted critics completely biffed their 1999 vintage assessment. 1999 was a watershed, monumental Washington vintage (at least on Red Mountain.)

My first visit to Cara Mia Vineyard this year, and what a beautiful day to go! Damon successfully rigged up a little disc attachment for the Deere - it tills the top 4 inches nicely. Meanwhile the crew pre-pruned the old vines, making it easier to finish the job in a couple weeks.

We are delighted to again be on Sean Sullivan's Northwest Wine Report's Top 60 wines of the year for our 2022 Camerata, Cara Mia Vineyard! Here is Sean's review:

Cadence 2022 Cara Mia Vineyard Camerata Red Mountain $70
95 points, Cellar Stocker
Cabernet Sauvignon (67%) makes up just over two-thirds of this wine, with the rest Merlot (25%) and a healthy dollop of Petit Verdot. The aromas are subdued, with notes of black currant, cherry, fresh herb, violet, and chocolate nib. The palate is dry, flavorful, and tightly coiled. As with all Cadence wines, the immaculate structure is the star of the show, though there’s no shortage of fruit. It also brings the vintage’s pleasing freshness. Stunning stuff. Best from 2030 to 2040. 14.4% alcohol. Natural cork. 300 cases produced. Reviewed October 6, 2025.

Super cool to receive a recommendation from Ray Isle and the Food&Wine Magazine team for 2023 Coda! The part about being 'one of Washington's top winemakers' doesn't stink either ;)

Cadence Winery was thrilled to be part of the BMAC food bank auction in Walla Walla last Friday night. Gaye and I were able to donate $24,000 of the profits made on sales of our Coccinelle Bis Syrah. Christophe Baron generously donated the fruit to us with the stipulation that profits go to charity. We also auctioned two bottles of the 100 point Syrah for $1500 EACH, bringing our total contribution to north of $27,000!

Another wonderful Coda review rolls in, this time from prestigious Decanter Magazine:

The Coda is one of Washington’s great values; these are the declassified barrels from Cadence’s Cara Mia Vineyard on Red Mountain. A sort of ‘baby Bel Canto,’ Cadence’s top wine. There are savoury notes of wild herbs and dried potpourri that mingle nicely with pops of blue fruit and a graphite streak of minerality. Complex and delicious on the palate, this wine is billed as gluggable by the folks at Cadence, but the fact is it offers more complexity and nuance than many Washington red blends. Flavours of Herbs de Provence, black bramble fruits and nuance that comes from mineral complexity, with a touch less structure than Cadence's top wines.

93 points and a glowing review.
