We are excited to be a part of UCD CVET(UNIVERSITY OF DAVIS VETERINARY EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM ) team’s effort for ongoing research into the acute and long term impacts of wildfire smoke on horses. We, as humans, are fortunate to be able to wear N95 masks and retreat indoors to better air quality. Our horses are not! I see people out exercising and riding their horses the first clear air day post wildfire event and it’s not right! The Salt Point wildfire had our AQI at over 1400!!! The worst air quality in the world! This is also almost double the AQI that we have had the last four major wildfire since 2017.

ALL 14 HORSES INCLUDED IN THE STUDY HAD RESPIRATORY DISTRESS IN A POPULATION OF 35. To be clear, the other horses were NOT participating in the study.

Normal respiratory rate is 12. Almost ALL of the horses looked at were over 30 and one was at 44 and had noticeable lung sounds which is abnormal. Most of the horses had a grimaced appearance in their muzzle and nasal flare of 1-2 on a scale of 0-3. These signs are subtle to an untrained eye.

We are happy and honored to include 14 of our horses here in this cutting edge research and very much look forward to more clear guidelines and recommendations from the vets on how best to support and proceed with exercise post wildfire events. Please stop and think about your horses before taking them out to work after a fire event. There are some basic guidelines out there but please always err on the side of caution and love for your horse. 🙏🏻❤️‍🩹💛🙏🏻
