Taking inspiration from nature and learning from the experience of her mentors, winemaker Akiko crafts balanced and refined Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Ken and Akiko Freeman Founded Freeman Winery on the West Sonoma Coast in 2001. They craft small lots of acclaimed Russian River and Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Named in honor of Akiko Freeman, this wine is a reflection of her journey, her dedication to Pinot Noir, and the friendships that have shaped Freeman Winery along the way. Elegant, expressive, and crafted with intention, it’s a wine that brings people together around the table.

That same spirit lives within Friends of Freeman. More than a membership, it’s a community of wine lovers who share a passion for handcrafted wines, meaningful connections, and giving back. Through Friends of Freeman, 5% of every membership is donated to local charitable organizations, helping support the communities we call home.

It takes discipline to farm on the far edge of the West Sonoma Coast. Fog, wind, steep hillsides, patience. It’s a place that asks everything of you. For Akiko, that challenge has always been part of the beauty. As one of the few female Japanese Winemakers in the world, it’s that passion for the detail and the land that carries through each and every day.

Her approach to winemaking begins long before harvest. It starts in the vineyard, walking the rows at Gloria and Yu-Ki Estate, paying close attention to the health of the soil, the vines, and the surrounding ecosystem. Stewardship of the land has always been central to her — farming with intention, protecting these coastal sites, and ensuring they continue to thrive for generations to come.

Her wines reflect that philosophy: thoughtful, precise, and deeply connected to place. Every vintage is not simply made, but carefully guided — an expression of the land, the season, and the people who care for it every day.

Tucked beneath the redwoods at Freeman Winery, our Redwood Grove Tasting offers a different side of West Sonoma Coast hospitality. A shaded picnic table, cool coastal air, towering trees overhead, and a lineup of current release Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines that feel right at home in the forest they came from.

Available Friday through Sunday, this self-guided outdoor experience invites guests to bring along a picnic lunch, settle in for a while, and enjoy the quieter side of wine country. Dog friendly, relaxed, and surrounded by nature in the heart of our estate vineyard.

$50 per person | Complimentary for Members

Springtime at Gloria Estate…

The Sonoma Coast weather has been on full display so far this growing season. From springtime rain, followed by warm days and cool nights, back to some light showers, followed quickly by more warmth…it’s been a little bit of everything out here. But when it comes to Mother Nature, we just have to sit back and let her do her thing. Either way, sunshine, rain, cool foggy mornings, each day out here is beautiful.
