📝A quick note for anyone new here, my clients are kind enough to remind me not everyone realizes how this works.
I’ve been cooking and baking from home for a long time. WAY before it was trendy, before everyone had a porch pickup and a Venmo. What started as feeding people I loved turned into catering, weekly meals, desserts, and a customer base that has kept me busier than I probably should admit.

Then I lost my son, Coen, to DSRCT. A kind of Sarcoma.

After Coen, I kept doing what I’d always done..the cooking, the hugging, the delivering, the chatting, the spending money I didn’t always have on families who needed it. But the work doesn’t run on good intentions. It runs on this. On you ordering the chicken casserole. Orders from The Brown Bag.

Now for the easy part. HOW TO ORDER:
• Read the menu.
• Message, text, or comment with the cravings.
• Tell me which pickup day works for you.
• I’ll confirm. I’ll cook. You come get it.

No forms. No apps. No secret handshake. Just real food made by one actual person.

⚠️⛔️‼️Fair warning: I book up fast. If you want something, reach out sooner rather than later. If I’m full that day, I’ll tell you and we’ll figure it out. And
for those who skipped straight to the bottom looking for the menu 👀I see you, and I respect it.

👇🏻 NEXT WEEK’S MENU 👇🏻
🍽 Chicken Enchiladas & Creamy Rice
🍽 Breakfast for Dinner
A big ol’ breakfast pot pie loaded with eggs, sausage gravy, and cheese. Served with fruit salad.
🍽 Meatloaf & Mac (or mashed potatoes if that’s your love language)

SWEETS:
🥧 Key Lime Pie with a white chocolate pretzel crust
🍪 Chocolate Chip Cookie Sandwiches with icing in the middle.
🍓 Fresh Strawberry Pies
These sold out last week..but coconut available too. And a vanilla bean cheesecake with an Oreo crust

And a little known fact…
You know you can just ask, right?

If there’s something you’re craving, a dessert you’ve been thinking about, a meal you need for company, a birthday, a sick friend, a new baby, a rough week, or you simply don’t feel like cooking… ask!! If I can make it, I will.

Bad news is loud right now. For me and others. Life is life-ing hard.

This is the part where I remind you that a good meal fixes exactly none of that and also kind of does.

Orders open this next week. Let’s do something about it.

Love,
Your baker, cook, gravy maker, dessert dealer, occasional therapist, and CEO

This week I catered a wedding.

500 pieces of something sweet, made by hand, for a family celebrating the beginning of a life together. A boy and a girl standing before God and each other with everything ahead of them.

I’ve had a hard week..I’ll leave it at that.

But here’s what I know..the smells of food celebration pull you in. The muscle memory takes over. And doing something you love for people who need it won’t fix a thing about hard weeks, but it lends itself to the dragging along and finishing well.

That’s Brown Bag. 500 pieces of me to help start someone’s life. And the same work that filled a reception hall with something sweet, bought me two afternoons on a couch with a family in the middle of something hard. Twice I got to sit in person, not a phone call or a text.. just hang out. Because that’s what the work makes possible.

Joy on one end. Crisis on the other. Brown Bag and Coen’s Way got to be in the middle of both.

Y’all gotta eat somewhere this week. Let it be here!

Next week’s menu, June 6th:

Meals:
🌮 Loaded Cheesy Soft Tacos
seasoned meat, beans, sauce, melty cheese, and with fiesta corn salad.
🍖 Carolina Pulled Pork
tender, no fuss, and served with creamy mac and cheese.
🍗 Italian Herb Chicken
herb marinated, juicy, served with parmesan roasted baby potatoes.

Sweets:
🥥 Coconut Cream Dream
silky coconut cream, toasted coconut, vanilla cookie crust.
🫐 Blueberry Crumble Cheesecake
creamy, swirled, buttery crumble on top.
🍓Fresh Strawberry Pie
strawberries piled high in a sweet glaze on a buttery graham cracker crust, y’all can finish it with a cloud of whipped cream

Every meal goes further than your plate. That’s the whole point. Comment below to order and payment or the donation link follow:

It was June 1st.

Hard frost in West Virginia that morning. The ground doesn’t even thaw there till mid June. And somehow this spectacular, unhinged, deeply civilized human being showed up anyway.

That’s Coco Brown for you.

One thing he taught me (and cancer will teach you this too) is that complete opposites can be true at the same time:
This is terrible and tell me a joke about it.
I’m wrecked and pass the cheesecake.
Life is beautiful. Life is brutal.

I miss him and I’m going to eat his food this week and feel him everywhere! He was a boy in the best, stupidest, most endearing sense of the word. Free will personified. Living bigger than most adults I know. Bold enough to get away with it and charming enough that you let him.

He was also sixteen months old, climbing out of his crib in the middle of the night, eating the center out of a derby pie and passing out somewhere in the house with chocolate all the way around his mouth. A baby criminal.

Civilized. Unhinged. Both. And always.

This week’s menu is his. Let’s feed people like he would. Aggressively.

🍽️ Coco Brown Bday week June 1 Meals: .you already know what it starts with..

🌶️Spicy Chicken with Mac and Cheese
Dear Midwesterners, this is what yall call spicy.
Dear Southerners, that’s cute.
Coen Brown’s all time fave.

🥘Beef Stew with Corn Pudding
My kids will eat soup in July if there is enough meat involved ..add a little Thanksgiving side? They will run to it.

🍞Mac Sauce Sliders with Pasta Salad
Somewhere between a sloppy joe and a teenage athlete inhaling food after practice.

🍭..and the sweets..🍦
I’m going to need a moment here, because I keep encountering people who are just… not ordering dessert. On purpose. Repeatedly. By choice.

I’m so sorry. That’s not something I can fix, but I am sorry.

In the words of the Grammy of all Grammy’s, Patty Ann Lyon “think about every person on the Titanic who passed on the dessert tray.”

Eat the sugar, honey. Nobody is impressed by your restraint. Grow up.
(She says it with love. I’m saying it with love. We’re all saying it with love.)

•THE Derby Pie
Coen’s favorite late night snack. Pecans meet chocolate.

•Ice Cream Pie
Can y’all please step away from those nasty dot cakes. Nothing good about sugary aquarium sand drowned on cake. A few will do. Vanilla. Hot fudge sauce. Strawberry sauce. Oreo crust.

• Peanut Butter Chocolate Cheesecake
My kid practically survived hospital stays one cheesecake at a time.

Order this week. Eat something actually good. And if you’re able.. drop something in the jar for Coen’s Way. There are families in THIS community fighting right now in every sense of that word. One I sat with just last night.

Feed people. Love people. Be a little unhinged about it.

Short story long…this is a terrible stretch of months and days for our family. Not because grief only hits hard on certain days, but because some days shine a giant fluorescent highlighter over it. Sunday is one of those for us.

And grief is super weird. The doom scrolling of your own life and memories is a fickle little thing… feels less “this drives me crazy” and more like those really greatly literature books where they’d simply write, “she went mad.”

You might indulge the sadness for awhile because, well…you’re sad. Then you try to break out of it. Then you give up because pretending you aren’t sad is dumb too.

That was yesterday morning for me. Waking up crying and snotty, listening to my favorite surfer Jesus bible nerd podcast, then deciding if Missouri wanted to cosplay fall in MAY…fine, I will participate.

So I made browned butter pumpkin snickerdoodles with caramellly caramel glaze because my coping mechanisms are seasonal and butter based.

And for a little while, it helped. Which I think is true for a lot of us..just trying to survive suffering in weird little ways.

🍽️Anyway. I’m available for food Monday and next TH/FRI if anybody needs meals or treats. The menu is basically organized chaos and random requests at this point, so message me if you would like something.

More than anything, though…this weekend, be intentional. I know Memorial Day has a specific meaning, and I’m not here to become the most boring historical facts reciting person at the cookout because I’m no bore! ..but kindness and awareness cost us so little.

Love people on purpose. Check in again. Then again after that.

“Oh I already did yesterday.”
Cool. Do it again, dummy.

And here’s a picture of the pumpkin cookies with caramel glaze that I ate while listening to Love at First Latte because disassociating in my rom com audible is still cheaper than therapy, baby💁🏼‍♀️❤️🇺🇸

Message me or comment if you need me next week or wanna send someone struggling..some love in their belly xx

A little love for my friend Tina and her family this week❤️❤️

Here’s something people probably don’t realize about Brown Bag: almost everyone who hires me was already my friend first. Rarely does a stranger find me. My new clients are almost always someone those friends told and sent my way. The referral chain runs almost entirely through people who already love me 🫶🏻

Which means what Tina did, showing up year after year, trusting me with her people at Sorosis inside the beautiful Heard House, putting my name in rooms I’m not in, it’s not just loyalty. It’s how this whole thing works.

And here’s the part I want clients to really hear: every time someone like Tina chooses Brown Bag, they’re also choosing the families I serve through Coen’s Way. Tina hires me → I get to keep going → families in the middle of the worst seasons of their lives get a little more support.

I don’t say that to make it heavy. I say it because I want my clients like Tina to know exactly what they’re doing when they show up for us. They’re doing more than they probably realize.

Thank you for letting me feed your people again. I love you. 🤍

☀️Summer..ish ☀️
The calendar finally exhales!
For most of us, summer means a full stop.. a pause, a vacation, and a big ol breath out.

For families that I work with thru Coen’s Way ..breast cancer, sarcoma and childhood cancer..their summer means one less routine that helps a mom hold it together. Same hospitals. Same decisions. Same exhaustion but now there are kids at home and childcare added to the pile.

In case you’ve missed one of my many posts explaining why The Brown Bag exists, truth is I’ve never been especially good at traditional fundraising.

What I am good at.. showing up.
Being oddly awesome at awkward and uncomfortable.
I know my way around a hospital bed/room/front desk/cafeteria/nurses station.
I have a steel trap mind for the little things people forget to ask for when a family is in survival mode.
And of course..the meals.

So I cook.
This page, The Brown Bag, helps me raise money in the most honest way I know how. I feed people while helping families fight battles painfully familiar to my own once upon a time.

One meal. One week. Still matters.

✨ Menu for the week of May 18 ✨

🌮 Soft Taco Tray Night
Seasoned beef, soft tortillas, creamy rice. Easy. Fun. Minimal dinner table negotiations.

🥔 Classic Meatloaf & Mash
Rich homemade meatloaf, buttery mashed potatoes, the kind of meal people swear they “don’t like” until suddenly they’re scraping the plate clean.

🥗 Baked Chicken Salad and Strawberry Salad
My baked chicken salad with almonds, lemon, creamy goodness and the prettiest strawberry salad moment because May is trying very hard to become summer.

Sweets

🍋 Blueberry Crumble Cheesecake
Lemony and blueberry loaded cheesecake with a buttery crumble magic on top.

🍑 Brown Butter Peach Cobbler Crumble
Warm, gooey oven roasted peaches tucked under brown butter crumble. Spoonable Southern hospitality.

🍫 “Fruit Could Never” Chocolate Hostess Sheet Cake
Deep chocolate sheet cake, fluffy filling tucked inside, shiny chocolate top with the little swirl
