Every organization has a mission. For some, it’s feeding people in need. For others, it’s educating students, supporting local food systems, creating sustainable housing communities or providing restaurants with the freshest ingredients possible.

What unites a growing number of these organizations is their use of container farm technology to help achieve those goals.

A lesser-known fact about blue oyster mushrooms: they are actually carnivorous.

While most people think of mushrooms as organisms that simply decompose dead plant material, blue oyster mushrooms in the wild have evolved a fascinating survival strategy. When nitrogen is scarce in their environment, their mycelium (the root-like network beneath the surface) releases tiny toxin droplets that paralyze microscopic roundworms called nematodes. Once immobilized, the mushroom's mycelium penetrates the worm's body and digests it, absorbing valuable nitrogen and nutrients.

Scientists believe this adaptation helps oyster mushrooms thrive on nutrient-poor wood, where carbon is abundant but nitrogen is often limited. In a sense, the mushroom supplements its diet by "hunting" tiny animals.

One of the perks of working at FarmBox Foods is getting handwritten letters (yes, those are still a thing) from students who either toured our farm campus or received a visit from one of our staff to discuss how our technology enables people to grow healthy food indoors using fewer resources.

Fielding questions and seeing the kids' faces light up when they first get a look at the technology is priceless and never gets old. We sincerely appreciate their interest in what we do and we hope to play a part in inspiring the next generation of farmers!

Climate-controlled spaces allow people to farm in places where it's historically been difficult or impossible. Abbreviated growing seasons, weather extremes, pests and stripped soil (among other factors) can be sizable barriers to food access, and our aim is to smash those barriers by empowering people to grow their own food in their own community. We provide the equipment, the knowledge and the support to make that happen.

For as long as we can remember, agriculture has depended on one thing above all else: a measure of predictability. The Farmers’ Almanac was a crucial ally in the fight. Growers would rely on seasonal weather patterns, dependable water access, stable transportation networks and consistent labor ava...
