Hey cran-fans, I’m sorry to tell you there won’t be a cranberry harvest for us this year. The second year of drought has just been too much, and the berries are both sparse and tiny (please see photo below of 22 cranberries fitting in a tablespoon!) Fingers crossed for more rain next year!

Hey Cran-Fans,

It’s cranberry time! There are coolers out at 100 Sis Porter Road in Sedgwick and 269 Falls Bridge Road in Blue Hill. As some of you know, this year is a little bit different for Red Bog. Kipp is busy with other things this fall (last-minute opportunity to teach on Isle au Haut!), so this time it’s mostly just me (Dale) which means we’re making some adjustments.

We usually do a final hand-sort after the berries run through the sorting machine to make sure the berries are all perfect. We’re limiting that fine sorting at the end, so you may find berries that have a dent or a bruise or are at the fully ripe stage where they taste great, but are no longer firm enough to store for months in your fridge. Because you may need to do a little sorting at home, depending on your storage needs, we’ve lowered the price from $8/1lb bag or $35/5lb bag to $6/1lb bag or $25/5lb bag. I hope that works for everyone and I appreciate everyone’s understanding as we work things out.

I also appreciate everyone’s patience with my lack of prompt communication this year. I’m not as good at the office side of things, and I just haven’t figured out how to do everything that needs to be done in the time I’ve got. So thank you for your patience, and I will try to respond to individual messages very soon.

Because I’m trying to keep things as simple as possible, we’ll only be selling out of the coolers again this year, and I won’t be able to do a lot of special orders. If you need larger amounts than we usually stock in the coolers, let me know and we’ll make arrangements. Otherwise, I’ll try to keep the coolers filled and I hope you’ll stop by!

We're sold out! There was a lot of cranberry enthusiasm and they went quickly. Thank you all!

It's cranberry time! The cooler is out at 100 Sis Porter Road in Sedgwick, and the cranberry sign points the way. We probably won't put out the Falls Bridge cooler this year and hope that the drive isn't a barrier to anyone's cranberry plans.

Can you tell which one is not like the others? That's one that that got more water over the summer--the others are from our straight run. Volume is not high this year, so we suggest that as we (slowly) sort these tiny berries (concentrated! no need to chop! must be better!), you not wait to fill your cranberry needs. Which brings us to the question posed as we stared for hours over a procession of berries to sort: would you identify yourself as a cranatic, or a cran-fan?

We are delighted to announce that in addition to our own cranberries, we are also bringing you big, beautiful, pointy-ended Ben Lears (cranberries have varieties, too!) grown by Root Power Farm of Ellsworth, new owners of the redoubtable Pat and Mike's, vanguard of midcoast organic cranberry growing! Blue Hill stores and coolers are stocked.
