Planting depth is one of the biggest reasons seeds fail. Too deep = they run out of energy. Too shallow = they dry out. Quick rule of thumb: plant seeds about 2–3x as deep as the seed is wide.
🌧️ Extra tips:
β€’ Press soil gently after sowing so seeds touch moisture
β€’ Keep the surface consistently damp until sprouting (mist, don’t flood) πŸ’§
β€’ Tiny seeds like lettuce and basil often do best barely covered
If your seedlings pop up with seed coats stuck, humidity is usually the fix πŸ₯Ή

March is the window for starting a mixed lineup of vegetables, herbs, and flowers indoors. Combining crops with different growth rates means staggered transplant dates and continuous activity from early spring through summer.

SLOW STARTERS β€” begin now

β†’ Celery β€” start 10 to 12 weeks before transplant. The slowest starter in the garden but consistent moisture and patience reward crisp fall stalks.

β†’ Basil β€” start 6 to 8 weeks before last frost. Pinch early growth tips to encourage bushy plants instead of tall leggy stems.

MEDIUM LEAD TIME β€” start in the next few weeks

β†’ Swiss Chard β€” start 4 to 6 weeks before transplant. One of the most forgiving crops. Produces colorful harvests from spring through first hard freeze.

β†’ Beet β€” start in deep cells 4 to 6 weeks early. Each wrinkled seed cluster produces multiple seedlings that need thinning to one per cell.

β†’ Melon β€” start 4 to 6 weeks early in biodegradable pots. Heat-demanding crop that needs warm soil to thrive at transplant.

β†’ Zinnia β€” start 4 to 6 weeks before last frost. The easiest cut flower from seed. Blooms continuously when spent heads are removed.

β†’ Dill β€” start 4 to 6 weeks early in deep pots. Taproot develops fast so use biodegradable containers to avoid root shock at transplant.

FAST STARTERS β€” wait until 3 to 4 weeks before last frost

β†’ Cucumber β€” start 3 to 4 weeks before last frost. Fast-climbing vine that needs warm soil above 65Β°F and vertical support ready at transplant.

β†’ Squash β€” start 3 to 4 weeks before last frost in large cells. Vigorous roots fill small pots fast so timing the transplant is critical.

The key to March seed starting is matching the lead time to the crop. Slow growers go in now. Fast growers wait. Get the timing right and transplants are ready exactly when the soil is.
