We recycle and re-purpose something that is so vastly manufactured without a true use once it has "died." Because of their unique purpose, refrigerators hold an enormous amount of greenhouse gas contributors in the form of refrigerants and cooling agents. Once these fridges have reached the end of their useful life, most are taken to a scrapyard where they are broken down in an effort to extract a
nything valuable or worth selling. Often times, the refrigerants are improperly recovered or disposed of which results in tens of millions of metric tons of CO2-equivalent being released into the atmosphere each year. EFF offers an solution to help rectify that wrong. By re-purposing these fridges into habitats for both fish and plants, we help to take some of that CO2 and convert it back into oxygen through the plants. The structure of the fridge itself supports the living area for the fish while raised growbeds built on top hold the medium to support the plants. A simple bit of plumbing draws the nutrient rich water from the fish, truckles it through the plants' growbeds, and returns the now filtered water back to the fish.
