Sometimes, owning a farm is heartbreaking. 💔 Tonight was one of those hard nights.
We discovered that our sweet Maybelle has an infection around her umbilical cord. We rushed her to Auburn University, where we learned that she has an abscess as well as an umbilical hernia. Because of the abscess, she is at risk of becoming septic, so the veterinarians want to perform surgery as soon as possible.
The estimated cost of her surgery is around $4,000–$5,000, and it could be more depending on what they find during surgery and how long she needs to stay at the hospital.
One of the hardest parts is knowing that the hospital can’t simply move forward with the surgery without knowing we can cover the cost. And, as most farmers know, $4,000–$5,000 is a huge amount for a calf.
We’re going to spend the next couple of days doing everything we can to raise the funds, including hosting photo sessions and finding other ways to help cover her care. At the advice of the incredibly kind staff at Auburn, we also started a GoFundMe for Maybelle.
