Calves everywhere! Can anyone guess the breed of this heifer? Dam is a jersey 😍

Hint: her sire is a beef breed, but she doesn’t look anything like the breed. Dual purpose breed from Austria. Has white on her tail though!

Sire is a Pinzgauer!

Happy Moo-thers Day! 🥰 Sometimes it’s messy, frustrating, and you need some help. Yesterday, I spent about 30 minutes helping this little girl get some much needed colostrum from her mama. She was born just after the morning milker was done so she would have had to wait until the night’s milking to get bottle fed the colostrum and that was too late for my liking. The sooner the calf gets colostrum, the better chance of good health in the first few months of life because of the antibody absorption in the calf’s gut. I checked on her mid day and it was obvious she hadn’t drank off her mom. So, I helped. The mom (Endowyn) was mostly cooperative and stayed pretty still considering we were in a field and she was grazing. The calf though…not the brightest 🤪. She would get on a teat with my help (the cow was streaming milk) and suck a few times and then get off. I felt like I put her back on about 100 times 😳. And she peed on me (par for the course but…could have been worse 🤨 💩) In the end, I was sweaty and had a sore back but…colostrum in the belly…success!

A word on Reyna and Ryn, her dam/mom and grand dam/grandmother. They are the sweetest cows, with the softest grey coat. I’ll try to get a picture of one or both of them so you can see.
