This weekend felt like a "the best laid plans of mice and men" kind of weekend. Yesterday morning, Derek noticed one of our cows laying the mud. When he checked on her later in the day, she was in the same place and unable to get up on her own. It took a tractor, a long 2x4, two chains, and all three of us to get her out and back on solid ground. She wobbled around for awhile but eventually ended up in the far pasture happily eating grass. This morning, Jason and I both woke up sick (sinus, cough, allergies, whatever is making one eye run and itch constantly). Mine was a sore throat and loss of voice (I still wonder if Jason and/or Derek prays for that every once in a while???). Anyway, I went out with Derek to feed and check on Patty who we found to be down again and unable to get up on her own, on quite solid ground. Sigh, she has had a large lump on her face for a few years. At first, we thought it was an abscess, so we treated it as such. Then, we thought it was cancer, but that was almost 4 years ago. She's had TWO calves since then. We finally decided she must have been bitten by something, but the area grew slowly over time. We knew she was on borrowed time, but she was still eating and seemed to be enjoying life, until today. Today forced the decision to put her down upon us. She was miserable, and you could tell she was done. With the assistance of a couple of local friends, we put her down and got her buried. (Thank you Lord for the rain we've gotten or even a backhoe wouldn't have been able to dig that dirt.) She gave us three nice calves in her life. RIP Peppermint Patty
