The Foundation of a Premium Lawn: Subgrade Preparation & Critical Post-Installation Watering 📈💧
When investing in a new sod installation, the long-term success of your turfgrass relies entirely on two critical phases: what happens right before it hits the ground, and what happens immediately after. Rushing either step is one of the most common—and costly—mistakes in landscape establishment.
First, the foundation is everything. Compact, uneven, or poor-quality soil restricts oxygen flow and prevents the root system from knitting into the subgrade. To ensure rapid establishment, the soil base must be thoroughly tilled, cleared of debris, and precisely graded before a single roll of turf touches the ground.
Second, the clock starts the moment the sod is laid. Proper post-installation irrigation is non-negotiable. New turf requires immediate, deep watering to saturate both the sod layer and the underlying topsoil. For the first two to three weeks, the subgrade must be kept consistently moist—never allowed to dry out—to encourage the young roots to dive deep and lock in.
