It’s been pretty quiet on our page recently, and for good reason- we’ve been doing a lot of thinking about what we want our micro dairy herd to look like in years to come, and we’ve decided to take a leap in a new direction that we are pretty excited about!

I’m not going to say much more until our first new arrivals in November, but I will give one little hint…there are about to be a lot less ears around here.

This also means that we will be posting a good portion of our Nigerian herd for sale in the near future. Keep an eye on the page for sale posts if you are in the market!

While we’re on the subject of goats, this is one of my promising yearlings that will be on the breeding schedule this fall. She’s the last retained kid from our sweet Goose, and one of the last crop of kids under our old herd name. Bodarka HFG Adilida, “Moose” for short, pretty much embodies every trait that I want to see in my line. If I can ever decide who to breed her to, we’ll see if her mammary system lives up to the rest of her ❤️

Our friends at Tilted 2 Ranch have this beautiful buck for sale who is worth a good look. Deal has been very influential in my herd, but he’s too related to my girls for me to bring him back here. He contributed extreme length and dairy elegance to his daughters and one of his girls was our first home bred Best In Show at a competitive ADGA show!

No matter how many containers are around here, it’s always the shirt that suffers in the end 🙈

New garden favorite unlocked- the Garden Peach tomato! They just started ripening this week, and they have a fruity flavor and odor and even have a subtle fuzz on the fruit and leaves! I love trying new tomato varieties, and this one is definitely a keeper. It’s an heirloom indeterminate that originated in Peru, and it’s doing really well for me in a big pot at the entrance to my garden. When the rest of my plants burn up here shortly, I’ll truck this one up to the porch and give it some afternoon shade ❤️

Ok, so I’ve always heard bad things come in threes, and I’m starting to think it might be true. I’m just hoping that this one has a better ending…

This is Felix, one of our spring kids. He’s one of three adorable bucklings that I’ve been meaning to post for sale, but I was waiting for some paperwork to come through from ADGA. Anyway, of course Felix is my favorite. He’s the sweetest guy, balanced conformation, blue eyes, and beautiful coloring- possible moonspots (sister is covered in them).

So last night when we went out to the buck pen to lock up, Felix didn’t come to the gate with his cousins. We move the littles back up by the house at night just to keep them safe from coyotes since we don’t want to lock them up with the big boys quite yet. We got lanterns as it was almost dark and started searching the pen. Just as we were about to give up, we heard a faint goat sound. Turns out, Felix must have tried to jump the wire fence by climbing onto a pallet, didn’t quite clear it, and got a hind foot hung in the very top wire. He was hanging by the foot over the very back fence, wedged in the thick brush/trees that he was probably trying to eat. I have no idea how long he was there.

By this time, it was pitch black and the kids and I were horrified. I found some wire snips and cut him out of the fence because we couldn’t get his foot unstuck, and then I had to claw my way through the solid mass of brush (and most likely copperheads) to get to him and hand him over to my kids. Right after I climbed back in the pen, the coyotes started screaming RIGHT on the other side of the fence. I bet they were angry that I stole their snack away.

We took Felix back up to the house, gave him a shot of Banamine, and looked at the foot. There was some bleeding and swelling, but not terrible. My bigger concern was shock, broken bones or torn muscles etc., and dehydration/rumen shutdown since he could have been like that for quite awhile. He made it through the night and a took him in to the vet this morning. Amazingly, the wire was just wrapped and embedded but wasn’t piercing anything and didn’t go all the way to the bone. The foot was a little cold, so we’re hoping the loss of blood flow didn’t do permanent damage. Right now he’s resting in a pen in the shade on antibiotics and pain meds, but he’s eating and drinking and doing goat things.

Say a little prayer for Felix if you are so inclined, and I’ll let y’all know how it turns out.
