You might be surprised to learn what shade cloth percentage is recommended for tomatoes by the agricultural extension offices in DIFFERENT states.

We looked at what they said from Arizona, West Virginia, and Indiana, and were surprised with what we learned. Despite those three states having incredibly different climates, all three of the studies we referenced had very similar findings for shade cloth used with high tunnel tomatoes.

The findings showed that between 30% and 50% seemed to have the best positive impacts on tomato production regardless of which of those three states the research came from… pretty interesting stuff.

Shade cloth has proven to be an extremely popular upgrade option for high tunnels because it is so helpful for reducing solar gain inside the structures, but also because it doesn’t require any modifications to the buildings when installing it.
