You may have followed along last year when our son grew a GIANT pumpkin - Big Bertha made it to 714 pounds.

This year he has his sights set on hitting 1000 pounds. He started earlier this year, and so far things are going well (except for that time I let the greenhouse get to 124° 😱 - luckily all is well and the plant recovered.)

I’ll post updates throughout the summer so you can check in on the GIANT pumpkin project - it’s intense!!! 🎃

Dear Farmer’s Market friends,

We wanted to let you know we’ll be taking the summer off from The FRESH Project - Shawano Farmers Market. Selfishly, we want our summer Saturdays back to spend together as a family. It’s suddenly hitting us just how quickly our kids are growing up, and we want to spend those Saturdays doing the things they love most — which likely means weekends at cattle shows.

We plan to keep a small inventory of individual cuts in our resale freezer and will post updates here on Facebook when those become available. Watch for more information toward the end of June.

We will miss seeing all of you on Saturday mornings. This doesn’t mean we won’t return to the market in future years — we’re just taking a pause for now. Thank you for your support, friendship, and for being part of our farmer's market journey. 🥩

The last cows walked through this good ‘ole chute today. It’s honestly the only chute I’ve ever run. My parents bought it when they moved their farm to Manawa, and I ran the head gate most of my teenage years. They gave it to us when we started our farm in Shawano.

Through the years she’s seen a few repairs, a new head gate on the front, and heard more “chute talk” than anyone would care to admit. 😆 As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end and a new chute with tub and alleyway is well overdue.

We’re excited to announce a new weekly feature for May—Behind the Beef! 🌟

Farm Name: Johnson Family Cattle

Location: Northwest of Shawano

Farm is owned and operated by Brad & Lindsay Johnson along with their children, Isaac & Charlotte

What makes this farm unique: At Johnson Family Cattle, we raise Angus cattle and sell freezer beef directly to customers throughout the year. We also participate in the Badgerland Bull Sale each March and consign bulls to the Midland Bull Test and Wisconsin Beef Improvement Association Bull Test.

Favorite Part of Raising Beef Cattle: Our females are marketed through the Marda Angus Farms Sale each fall, where we offer breeding-quality open and bred heifers.
We often joke, “If you’re interested in freezer beef, talk to Lindsay. If you’re interested in live cattle, give Brad a call.”
Favorite part of raising beef cattle:
It’s a challenging business, but we enjoy watching our operation grow, improving the genetic quality of our herd, and working together as a family to achieve those goals.

Why They’re Proud to Raise Beef: We take great pride in providing quality beef and raising cattle to fit our customers’ needs. We always say, “People want to know their doctor and their mechanic, but they also want to know their farmer. They want to know who raises their food.” Thanks for taking the time to read our story and learn more about us.

Earlier this week, we welcomed two Animal Science classes from Shawano Community High School. We enjoyed sharing more about what we do here at Johnson Family Cattle, and answering all their questions.

As an added bonus, our son was in one of the classes and we’re told we didn’t embarrass him too badly. 🙃
