Community Cooperative Farms

Community Cooperative Farms we cant free ourselves until we can feed ourselves. — The national black farmers mantra Washington, Great Barrington, and Sheffield, Massachusetts.

In the summer of 2010 five Pitzer College graduate started a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Farm with locations in Mt. We are growing Organic/heirloom vegetables and raising heritage breed chickens and pigs honoring the traditions of high-quality, holistically produced agriculture products, which have sustained civilization for millennia but are all too often ignored today. We are committe

d to fostering and supporting high-quality locally produced food, community, sustainability, education, (ideals of) sufficiency, permanent agriculture, living with the patterns of nature, spirituality, creativity and ancestry, while working to deconstruct interlocking systems of domination that deny all of us the right to live healthy productive lives. In this light, we are committed to addressing issues of race, gender, and class that continue to be ignored. In order for us to grow a more vibrant future, we have chosen to emphasize the importance and value of agricultural production. Wholesome and nourishing food grows strong communities and fosters the healthy social relationships and partnerships we seek to form. Such bonds between food and humans alike encourage us to strive for a better future for our local community and the world. One small step by each one of us will carry us beyond the domains of even our utmost expectations. We believe that respect for the earth and each other make the foundations of a healthy community. Growing our own food enables us to better care for our soils, our families, and our planet’s well being.

The House Committee on Agriculture is responsible for putting together the farm bill which is scheduled to pass in April. They start negotiating two years in advance. Keep in mind that two years ago, the Deputy Commissioner for the FDA was named; Micheal Taylor. Micheal Taylor was formerly employed as the VP for Monsanto. Monsanto is asking for immunity from federal law as one of the provisions in the upcoming farm bill. This is after they recently donated millions of dollars to defeat Prop 37 that would have required labeling on genetically engineered foods. Monsanto is the main player in the biotech (gmo) industry.

More about Michael Taylor. Michael Taylor became the director of the FDA at the time the Reagan-Bush administration was set to begin the new deregulation of Monsanto GMO policy.

Before joining the FDA Michael Taylor was a partner in a law firm named King and Spalding for 12 years. During which time Monsanto was not only a personal client of Michael Taylor’s (he worked directly on Monsanto legal matters) but he was also employed for 16 months as Vice President for Public Policy at Monsanto Company. Michael R. Taylor also served as co-chair of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) Committee that issued the report Intentional Human Dosing Studies for EPA Regulatory Purposes: Scientific and Ethical Issues (2004) [citation]. Another of his personal client’s was The International Food Bio-Technology Coucil (IFBC). (Intentionally infecting humans with diseases and toxins is an ongoing and very real issue)

The FDA created a new position for Michael Taylor “Deputy Director for Policy at the FDA” where he held this position from 1991 to 1994. This was the exact same time that policy regarding GMOs were changed to allow them to pass without scrutiny.

It seems that, of all things, an outbreak of Typhoid in Canada in the early 1940s was linked to Cheddar cheese made from raw milk (call her, Typhoid Elsie). Fast forward to 1950, and the FDA decides to do something about the dangers of stinky French cheese, and bans the sale of any imported cheese from raw milk that is not aged for a minimum of 60 days (a ban on domestically-produced cheese was, reportedly, instituted a few years before that). The thinking was/is that the curing process kills the bacteria (and recent research suggests that even that may not always work). And so began America's cheese panic. http://www.americablog.com/2012/07/is-it-easier-to-buy-gun-than-french.html
