I've come to realize that if I waited for our garden to look perfect, I might never share it with anyone. Despite the weeds, weather challenges, and sometimes being pushed to the back burner, it is surviving parts of it dare say even thriving. Messy gardens can still produce an abundance of food and are more relatable anyways.

Since I was a kid I have had a fear of cows so I never planned on owning one. Until a coworker offered Cory one heck of a deal on a small auction calf. At the same time I became unemployed so she became the perfect home pet project.

2.5 years of Martha might have changed my perspective on cows but not on the certainty that cows are not for us. This morning we took her in to get processed to stock the freezer. Just in time for the BBQ season 😉

Bottle feeding her
Using a dog house for a temporary house
Raising her with our first set of chickens
Moving her around the yard on a chain
Chasing her through the woods
Her getting backed into by the school bus
Waking up to her in our garage
Camden running for his life from being chased
Watching her jump over the garden fences
Watching her bob for apples in her water
Bucking bales in the summer to feed her in the winter
Holiday photo shoots
Hearing her moo all the way at the river
Taking a horn to the face felt like getting punched
Worrying about her in every type of weather

If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably means we took the kids to tractor supply...

Yesterday while finishing up vacuuming movement at the front door caught my attention. I expected a dog but was greeted with this face of mischief...
She then proceeded to
Sample the garden starts on the picnic table
Chase the dogs
Nibbled on the apple tree
Tested the strength of the chicken gate
Ran to the opposite side of the chicken pen to test the strength of that side
Jogged down the road
Stuck her head in the straw bale pile to become a blonde
Jumped the fence to the garden
Thought about joining the rabbits in their pen
Jumped out to go finish destroying the straw bale pile
Again hurdled the back garden fence to further explore the expanded garden
Finished her garden tour with a stroll through the onion and strawberry patch
One final agile leap over the garden fence
She was finally lead back to her pen with a bucket of corn.

All of this within half an hour

Raising Martha has been an experience but a memorable one.
