Eat Vermont Celebrating and supporting Vermont's local food scene!

10/01/2026

One of my favorite days in Vermont’s food scene: the Vermont Cheesemakers Festival. 🧀

Once a year, cheesemakers from around the state fill the Breeding Barn at Shelburne Farms. You can try cheeses, learn about cheese, talk to cheesemakers... a perfect Vermont day.

The festival is organized by the Vermont Cheese Council and the cap to Vermont Cheese Week. Buying directly from these cheesemakers is the BEST way to support the farms and dairy workers directly. 🐄

💛

Thanks to Wilkins Harley-Davidson out of Barre for the beautiful motorcycle to get Shelburne. 🏍

This is my brother Wil. He asked me to take down my last video, so I have.

Wil’s been in my corner for most of my adult life. He’s looked out for me in challenging times, and teased me mercilessly about them afterwards when the good times came roaring back.

Once, Wil and I had a real adventure riding my Honda Rebel around Pittsburgh. Another time, he took me out to the gay bar in Roanoke and got us wrecked on free drinks by flirting with the bartender.

Anyway, Wil grew up in The South and has overcome a lot - certainly more than I have - and I’ve always admired his cheery composure, his brave face, his endless sense of humor. I love Wil and I know he always wants to look out for me as a big bro does.

It’s true I'm frustrated with some things that I haven’t found a good way to articulate. I'm still finding my way forward, and I'm lucky to have friends who are volcanic in their love whose wisdom I can follow when I shoot a little too fast from the hip.

The video wasn't awful, ooh baby I've done worse, just off the mark. And since my bro wanted it gone, it's gone. 🫡

The only part of it worth keeping was a mention of the event I'm hosting today (Wednesday) which may be interesting and useful to you:

Welcome to Nomad Buns + Bowls and RVQ Smokehouse, two dank food trucks that share a home outside River Valley Market. 🍖 RVQ Smokehouse Nomad Buns + Bowls

Brandon started Nomad at the beginning of COVID. When he moved to the market in 2021, RVQ joined the family, with Dan helping build the smokehouse side from the start and Zach running the Nomad trailer. 🍜

Nomad is rolling out homemade bao, ramen and rice bowls. RVQ is smoking brisket for 14 hours, plus ribs, pulled pork, and maple buffalo wings. Plus, Dan makes bomb cornbread. 🔥

What’s better than ramen and bbq? Open year-round (even snow season!). Almost everything’s made in-house.🥘

Thanks to Wilkins Harley-Davidson out of Barre for the Heritage Classic and the ride to Wilmington. 🏍 Wilkins Harley-Davidson

Welcome to Yates Family Orchard. Google Maps may say Hinesburg, but Jess Yates will tell you this is Monkton. 🍎 Yates Family Orchard

Jess and Steve found the property in 2008 and began building Yates Family Orchard the following year. Some of these apple trees were planted back in the 1930s. Today, the family grows 28 varieties that ripen throughout the season, which means every visit can taste a little different.

The must-order is the Dreamee: one of their hand-rolled, hot cider donuts topped with a Vermont maple creemee. 🍩

Their Orchard Stand also puts Vermont makers front and center, with local food and artisan work produced mostly within 20 miles of the orchard.

Live Music Sundays begin September 13 with the John Lackard Blues Band, and Yoga in the Orchard runs Sundays from 10–11:30. 🎸

When you visit Yates, make sure to check in for the Eat Vermont PYO Challenge. Visit any three participating PYO spots between now and September 19 to complete the challenge and get invited to our end-of-season PYO party.

We’ve listed all 120+ PYO spots across Vermont in the Eat Vermont mobile app. Find it at www.eatvermont.com.

Mateo of Prophecy Chocolate brought Goyo, of Oaxaca, to host a natural dye event at Fable Farm. Prophecy Chocolate Zapotecstudio

Mateo and Goyo (Gregorio, but nickname) met in Goyo’s village Teotitlan del Valley when Mateo was on an educational trip to learn about cacao. 🍫

Goyo learned the art of Zapotec dyeing and handwoven textile art from his grandfather after whom he’s named.

An interesting detail: villages in Oaxaca specialize in single crafts. His village focuses on dying and weaving. Other villages are known for producing particular dyes pr other arts. 🇲🇽

All these dyes are produced using plants or insects (see below!) that are cultivated or wild harvested. No chemicals. Earth. 🌎

Many plants only grow seasonally, requiring dyes to made and used only during that part of the year. Some are made from dried insects, like the Cochineal, which require 70,000+ dried insects to create a single 1lb of vibrant red dye.

Incredible.

Of course, Mateo served drinking chocolate for those assembled and we ate apples off the trees. 🍎
