I can’t get enough…

…of the group of local grandfathers that come to the soda fountain nearly every day for coffee.

…of the weathered 80-year olds who sit tall in the saddle and still put in a full day’s work.

…of the wise ranch wives who’ve forgotten more about cattle and feeding crews and prairie life than I’ll ever know.

…of our neighbors who can rattle off the list of former owners of every piece of property in a 50-mile radius.

…of the ones who loved and nurtured this land decades before I was born.

Holy Moly ! I quit and gave up for today ... but these 2 sinks plus a few baskets are full to the brim. I can't believe that our garden is still producing this much food well into October , here in NC ! This is our 1st fall here growing things. Now to get the energy to can it all ! Not sure , yet what to make ! Thinking tomato jam with the FL everglades.. ( tiny ones hiding..)
Maybe a salsa but we don't have any hot peppers right now... hmm....

I anticipate the coming harvest day of our excess roosters. It is a deeply reflective time.

It has become a ceremony that all participate in. Yet it didn’t start off that way.

I had never taken the life of an animal to nourish me prior to living here. With welcoming animals into your life, death is also welcomed. Disease and injury are somber ways, painful ways. We do not consume the bodies of animals who have suffered. Nor do the pets we keep who rely on their offerings as well. Those bodies go to the lands, to complete their cycle of life and death, from ashes to ashes.

The bodies of those healthy and strong, bred with great intention for sustainability. Those end up in our freezer, meant to nourish us from the inside out for many meals in the future.

As our flocks grew, balance was tested constantly. To remove extra roosters from the flock is an act of husbandry. There will be fighting, over mating and death should they remain.

Raising them with the sole purpose of harvesting them allows many to remain detached. Yet for me, it’s the opposite. I become more attached because I know the day their life will end, it’s a choice I make. Not nature.

If I wanted the value in the nourishment that is meat, I had to get comfortable with culling on the lands. And all the steps and feelings it involved.

I wanted to connect with growing my families poultry, from hatch to the day their heart stops beating. I wanted it to be here, on the pasture they called home. Without travel, without unkind hands. Outsourcing the processing of prior flocks was always a deeply painful process that left me feeling disconnected when I held the flesh in my hands. I didn’t know how it ended, nor how it started in those cases.

Raising them from start to finish, means breeding their parents, caring for them for 18-20 weeks and then when the day comes it means picking them up, cradling them, thanking them and then protecting their gift and honour as they pass.

I never thought I was strong enough to carry it out. Yet now that I have done it I don’t know how I could go back. Creating boundaries and a practice around it made for a grounding and humbling experience like no other.

Such an interesting and perfect post. ( in my opinion , anyways... ((Jamie)) ) Harvesting our own meat is always difficult and sometimes nearly impossible. We have come a long way since we started raising poultry .. but also have so much more to learn & experience. It's crazy to think that when we grab that 10 gazillion dollar package of chicken breasts from the grocery store .. and not think of what it was fed or treated like - when we have our own little kings right outside in the backyard. Convenience, emotions , denial.. This week is harvest week for our quail ! 😭❤️🙏 It is so difficult ending the life of anything . I can joke right now, since we just sampled our 1st pressure canned quail meat for dinner- ( which was delish..) but come harvest day, it will be so hard, like always, but so worth it .

A little bit of this week's harvest. The summer garden is still going strong! So far we have canned tomato sauce, Quail, trout, and lots of pickled veggies! What's next ?? Share your favorite recipes please ! Tonight is candied jalapeño night - and maybe shred the squash to freeze.. We love to make squash pancakes ! Yum!

Oh man ! So far behind on posting what's going on over here ! But here is the latest excitement!!! Thank you Alchemist Farm & Garden !!! We were excited to pick up way more than expected baby chicks from the post office yesterday! They made it here safely , less than 24 hrs from being shipped , even though they were all set for a few days ! We were quite the scene at the post office ... being handed a box of super loud chirpers in front of the big line! Haha!

As a reminder, 2022 Hatching season, chicks, and hatching eggs will be in high demand again before we know it.

When you go to a poultry breeder remember:
*They may not sell chicks.
*They may not s*x their chicks.
*They may not be able to s*x out extra females.
*They may not be able to sell their chicks for an extremely low price like a hatchery.
Why? Because poultry breeders aren't hatcheries so don't treat them as such. Support your local poultry breeders. It's worth it.

We take the goats for a "walk" to the woods a few times a day for snacks . They won't go unless we are with them, even though it is literally - RIGHT THERE! LOL ! They love to eat all of the pines. So sad.....Our last walk. Bye, Baby- Girl! ! Have fun with your new family ! Thank you for all of the milk this week, my girl!
