Ravenwood Ready for GS1 Barcode Revolution: Linerless Labels Go Next-Gen

As the global packaging and retail industries prepare for the transition to GS1 2D barcodes, Ravenwood Packaging is leading the charge with linerless label solutions designed to accommodate the new coding standards through seamless integration with top-tier variable data coders.

GS1 2D barcodes are set to become the new global standard by 2027. They are replacing traditional linear barcodes, offering far greater functionality. These two-dimensional codes, often QR or Data Matrix format, can hold significantly more information, including expiry dates, batch numbers, traceability data and even links to consumer-facing content. For manufacturers and retailers alike, this means greater transparency, enhanced product safety and improved supply chain efficiency.

Futureproofing with Ravenwood

As a market leader in linerless labeling technology, Ravenwood is already ahead of the curve. The company’s linerless labels are not only sustainable, offering zero backing waste and reduced carbon footprint but are also developed to fully support GS1 2D barcode printing via inline coders.

By partnering with industry-leading coding specialists, Ravenwood is ensuring that its labeling systems are fully capable of printing variable GS1 data directly onto linerless labels at high speeds, without compromising print quality or packaging efficiency.

Beyond variable data coders integrated with Ravenwood linerless applicators, Ravenwood Vision systems are capable of decoding and verifying GS1 data matrix, standard data matrix and QR codes, providing a comprehensive check of the information encoded before dispatch.

“This is more than just a shift in barcode format,” said Dan Coe, Director at Ravenwood.

“It’s a revolution in how information travels with a product from production lines to consumers’ hands. Our linerless labels, when combined with integrated coders, provide an ideal platform for dynamic, real-time data that enhances traceability and brand interaction.”

“Packers and retailers should now be working with their approved Ravenwood Printers to review run lines and available print area space, for the interim while both old and new barcodes will be printed the Ravenwood network needs to widen its print box locations, in addition larger coder technology is possible onto most Ravenwood applicators.”

Benefits of GS1 2D Integration with Ravenwood Labels:

1) Increased Data Capacity: Capture more detail than traditional barcodes including expiry dates, batch info and provenance data.

2) Dynamic Updates: Coders can print variable information in real time, allowing for late-stage customization and improved batch control.

3) Food Safety & Traceability: Critical in industries like fresh produce and chilled goods, where traceability and accurate dating are essential.

4) Customer Engagement: QR-format GS1 codes can link directly to digital experiences, promotions or sustainability credentials.

5) Sustainable Labelling: Ravenwood’s linerless format reduces label waste and carbon emissions, aligning with corporate sustainability goals.

A Seamless Upgrade Path

Ravenwood’s integration approach ensures that manufacturers upgrading to GS1-compliant systems won’t face bottlenecks on the production floor. Whether retrofitting existing lines or installing new ones, the modular design of Ravenwood’s linerless applicators allows easy coder integration with minimal disruption.

As industry momentum builds toward the 2027 GS1 deadline, Ravenwood is encouraging producers and packers to review transitioning now – before the wave becomes a scramble.

How Linerless Technology Supports PPWR and EPR Goals

As packaging legislation continues to evolve across the UK and Europe, food producers are facing increasing pressure to reduce packaging waste, improve recyclability and demonstrate measurable environmental progress. The introduction of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) alongside Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) reforms is accelerating the shift towards more sustainable packaging solutions – making innovation more important than ever. At Ravenwood Packaging, our linerless technology is helping food manufacturers, fresh produce packers and retailers prepare for this changing landscape.

Reducing Packaging Waste
Traditional self-adhesive labels generate significant volumes of backing liner waste, much of which is difficult to recycle and often ends up in landfill or specialist waste streams. Ravenwood’s linerless labeling technology eliminates this backing liner completely, helping businesses:
1. reduce packaging waste
2. lower material usage
3. minimize disposal requirements
4. support sustainability targets

By removing unnecessary packaging components, producers can better align with the waste reduction and packaging minimisation objectives outlined within PPWR.

Supporting Lower CO₂ Emissions
Linerless labels also deliver operational efficiencies which can contribute towards lower carbon emissions across the supply chain. With more labels per roll, businesses benefit from:

1. fewer roll changes
2. reduced transport requirements
3. lower storage needs
4. improved production uptime

Combined, these efficiencies can help organizations reduce their overall environmental impact while improving operational productivity. Ravenwood’s CO₂ Calculator provides a direct comparison against traditional self-adhesive labels.

Helping Navigate EPR Requirements
As EPR schemes increasingly focus on packaging recyclability, weight and material efficiency, reducing packaging waste at source becomes a key consideration for producers. Switching to linerless technology can help simplify packaging structures and reduce the overall volume of packaging material placed onto the market – potentially supporting future compliance strategies and environmental reporting requirements.

Reducing Food Waste Through Vision Inspection
Sustainability extends beyond packaging alone. Ravenwood’s Vision Inspection systems are designed to help reduce food waste through accurate label verification and inspection. By helping ensure the correct label, barcode, allergen and date information is applied every time, producers can minimize costly errors, reduce rejected products and support supply chain accuracy.

Measuring Environmental Impact
To further support sustainability initiatives, Ravenwood also offers a CO₂ calculator which enables businesses to compare the environmental savings achieved when switching from traditional self-adhesive labels to linerless alternatives. This provides food producers with measurable data to support sustainability reporting and internal environmental objectives.

Building a More Sustainable Future
As PPWR and EPR continue to reshape the packaging industry, sustainable innovation is no longer optional – it is becoming essential. Ravenwood Packaging remains committed to helping food producers transition towards smarter, more efficient and environmentally responsible labeling solutions.

Linerless Multi-SKU for Fresh Produce Packaging Launches in Mexico

Customer: Aztec Fruits (Troya Alimentos / Troya Group)
Industry: Fresh Produce – Fruit & Vegetables
Location: Mexico
Solution: Ravenwood Nobac Linerless Labeling System

Introduction

Aztec Fruits, part of the Troya Group, is one of eight specialist companies covering production, packing, distribution and promotion. Operating under Troya Alimentos, the company is a leading Mexican fresh produce supplier with over a decade of experience delivering premium fruit and vegetables to national and international markets. Their portfolio includes Hass avocados, tomatoes, citrus, mangos and a wide range of seasonal produce, supplying major supermarkets, foodservice and export markets.

Historically focused on loose fruit and vegetables in Mexico, the company sought new ways to modernise packaging and introduce multi-SKU for fresh produce packaging, while reducing plastic waste. Inspiration came from European retail, where they observed linerless labeling systems in supermarkets like Carrefour during their time in Belgium.

Rodolfo Meza, Director at Troya Group, said: “Whenever I went grocery shopping, the linerless system always caught my eye – especially the neatly packed lines of tomatoes.”

The Challenge

Traditionally, Mexican fresh produce has limited pre-packed options: 1) Plastic bags for apples and grapes; 2) Clamshells for berries; 3) Nets for avocados and mandarins.

Prior to the project, nets were the only packaging format used by Aztec Fruits for many products. There were no readily available carton trays, no linerless labeling infrastructure and minimal consumer familiarity with packed fresh produce. “It was a big challenge to get trays in Mexico. There’s not one company that assembles small carton trays,” said Rodolfo.

Introducing linerless labeling therefore required not just new machinery, but a new market concept.

Why Linerless?

The decision to adopt linerless labeling was motivated by sustainability, operational efficiency and scalability, enabling Aztec Fruits to implement multi-SKU for fresh produce packaging for a variety of fruits and vegetables. With plastic regulations tightening in Mexico and consumer interest in sustainable packaging increasing, Azteca Foods saw an opportunity to modernize their product lines.

The company presented multiple repackaging options to Mexico’s second-largest supermarket, Chedraui, and Ravenwood’s linerless solution was the clear favorite. “The cost isn’t high, and that’s crucial – otherwise, expanding on a larger scale would be impossible,” Rodolfo added. After evaluating several repacking systems, Ravenwood was selected as the preferred partner.

The Solution

Azteca Foods implemented the Ravenwood Nobac linerless applicator, introducing:

1) Linerless labels applied directly to carton trays
2) 20 SKUs in the initial rollout
3) One Nobac linerless applicator (with a second planned)

Linerless Applicator

The Ravenwood Nobac 5000L is a purpose-built linerless applicator for fresh produce trays, engineered to apply "fruit lid" labels directly to carton/fiber-based trays at speeds up to ~70 packs per minute. Its modular design supports a range of tray formats and label styles, helping Azteca Foods scale multiple SKUs for fresh produce packaging with operational efficiency and sustainability at the core.

Linerless Labels

The linerless labels are printed by Reflex Labels’ North American operation in California, part of the globally expanding Reflex Group.

Fiber-Based Trays

TrayCycle™ trays from Paper, Pulp & Film paired with Ravenwood’s linerless labels form a complete, eco-friendly pack. The fiber-based trays combine sustainability, practicality and strong shelf appeal, working seamlessly with the linerless labels to deliver a modern, fully integrated packaging solution.

Performance

Large trays (mandarins, tomatoes): 20–25 packs per minute
Smaller trays (apples): up to 50 packs per minute

The Nobac system is easy to operate and fits seamlessly into existing workflows, even for staff new to Ravenwood’s linerless technology.

Market Rollout

The concept officially launched in January 2026, beginning with 30 stores. Expansion plans are ambitious:

Month 1: 50,000 packs
Month 2 (projected): 75,000 packs across 50 stores
Month 3 goal: 200,000 packs across 150 stores

Distribution spans Mexico City and extends as far south as Tulum and as far north as Los Cabos. Azteca Foods is also preparing to supply Amazon Fresh in Mexico City following trials and protocol development.

Sustainability & Environmental Impact

Ravenwood’s linerless labeling system aligns with Troya Alimentos’ sustainability goals, reducing plastic and backing paper waste. Early results indicate significant environmental benefits and alignment with consumer expectations. “Sustainability is really important to our brand and our customers.”

Retail & Consumer Response

Consumer curiosity has been high, with many experiencing linerless-labeled produce for the first time. Retail feedback has been positive, supporting further expansion. “Customers are curious about the concept – most of them have never seen it before.”

Sales growth data is still being tracked, but early retailer adoption suggests strong market potential.

Partnership & Support

The collaboration with Ravenwood has been crucial for a smooth market entry. “The support and guidance from Ravenwood’s team have been exceptional, making our market entry seamless.”

This international partnership has enabled Aztec Fruits to introduce a European packaging concept to a new market with confidence.

Future Plans

Expansion will continue as awareness grows in Mexico:

More SKUs
Broader geographic reach
Additional Nobac 5000 linerless applicators

“First, we need time for people to get used to the concept, and then we can expand to more products and regions,” Rodolfo concluded.

Conclusion

With Ravenwood’s Nobac linerless system, Aztec Fruits / Troya Alimentos has successfully introduced a category-defining fresh produce solution in Mexico. Combining operational efficiency, consumer appeal and sustainability, the project sets a benchmark for modern packaging in the country’s growing fresh produce market.

Linerless Labeling Responds to Growing SKU Complexity in Food Packaging

Food manufacturers managing rising numbers of SKUs are rethinking how labeling is handled on increasingly automated production lines. The advantages of linerless labels are becoming clear, as they help meet retailer demands for product variation and stricter compliance requirements while reducing pressure on traditional self-adhesive labels. Across meat, poultry, ready meals, bakery and fresh produce, frequent changeovers and short production runs are now common. While self-adhesive labels continue to work well on long stable runs, they can introduce inefficiencies when multiple label variants are required.

Linerless Labeling for High-Mix Production

Linerless labeling removes the backing liner allowing longer rolls fewer changeovers and smoother line operation. Variable data printing enables multiple SKUs to be produced using a single label format with product-specific information applied at the point of application.

For multi-SKU environments this approach supports speed, accuracy and flexibility without increasing operator involvement.

Key advantages include:
1. Faster changeovers between SKUs
2. Simplified label inventory
3. Reduced risk of mislabeling
4. Improved line efficiency
5. Elimination of liner waste

Industry Insight

David Gooding, Ravenwood’s Commercial Director: “SKU proliferation is now a defining challenge for food manufacturers. Linerless labeling allows rapid product changeovers while maintaining accuracy and compliance. It also removes unnecessary waste making it a practical solution for both efficiency and sustainability.”

Supporting Compliance and Sustainability

Automated linerless systems reduce manual handling and link labeling directly to production data, helping to ensure allergens, batch codes and use-by dates are applied correctly.

A Future-Ready Approach

As food packaging operations become more dynamic, linerless labeling is increasingly seen as a scalable solution for manufacturers managing complex SKU portfolios. By supporting automation compliance and sustainability, it is well aligned with the future direction of the industry.
