Let's chat breeding for temperament and how where your birds originate from can make a huge difference.
We don't keep mean/flighty birds. Period. We enjoy our farm and difficult birds aren't enjoyable. Temperament can be shaped by many factors. Some breeds are naturally more flighty than others. The way birds are raised can play a big factor. In our personal experience, lines are a major factor. Breeders that don't breed mean birds make a huge difference.
In this video you see two different grow out pens here on our farm.
The first group are all Salmon Faverolles. This was a breed we were really excited to add this year. This is a breed known to be very passive and you can see group 1 truly is. They have been since day one, we haven't spent a ton of time with them, its just who they are.
The second part of the video is mostly Silverudds Blue cockerels we are growing out, but peep the pair of Salmon Faverolles, especially the cockerel. His hackles are up before I open the door. He and the female here have been this way since day 1. They got moved in with these cockerels because they were too aggressive in the other group. While they're with another group of mostly young boys in this video, their behavior isnt shaped by these boys, they've been challenging since they hatched.
Both groups have been raised the exact same way. They were brooded the exact same, grown out in the exact same pens. They have been treated the same and given the same food.
The only difference in these two groups is where they originated. They are the same breed but from different lines.
One group is still here, the other has been culled from our program. We want to be sure that any bird that makes it to a breeding pen has an excellent disposition so that you get the best birds.
