Sunset Harvest Farm was founded in 2011 in the quiet country town of Shelbyville, Kentucky. The property is 17 acres, although only two acres are currently "under management." Our basic philosophy is simple: We are passionate about sustainability and taste. Passion for Sustainability
Growing great fruit and vegetables begins by creating a great environment. Unhealthy plants are unhappy plants, an
d production will be under duress with diminished quality. Sustainable farming practices lead to vegetables that are healthier for both you and the local ecosystem. Plants need nutrients and trace minerals to grow and produce fruits. In addition to our native clay soil, which is high in minerals, we incorporate compost from our year-round collection program. Our mix includes leaves, grass-clippings, horse-manure, straw and about 9,000 pounds of used coffee grounds we've collected this year from a neighborhood Starbucks. It's a rich mix of nutrients that plants love. We use only Certified Organic fertilizers and nutrients to make any further amendments to the soil (the farm has to wait three years to be officially certified organic). Our policy on using pesticides, herbicides, or other chemicals is: No thanks. We will gladly sacrifice yield so that we are confident that the food we sell is 100% chemical-free. As part of building a great environment, we avoid sprays that kill living things. We are managing a micro-ecosystem that contains our friends as well as enemies. By maintaining a clean garden environment, we benefit from insects such as ladybugs and parasitic wasps; these friends can be quite effective in minimizing damage. For blights and fungal disease, wholesale problems are prevented by watching carefully and pruning to maximize airflow or to remove affected parts of the plants before it affects the whole garden. We can also use over-the-counter soap or baking soda to treat stems and leaves topically. The plants are happier to have not been sprayed by any chemicals during their life cycle, and production and quality benefit accordingly. In the end, all is usually well in the garden if we just allow nature to work its magic. Passion for Taste
Building a great environment is important because we want our food to have rich flavors and exciting textures. Real food, grown under nature's watchful eye, has sublime taste and a story to tell - something you won't find coming from the industrial agricultural complex. Ultimately, it's the passion for taste that drives our push for excellence on the farm. We've done variety trials the past two years searching for heirlooms that have character. We've explored better ways to harvest, and established an optimal harvesting time for each variety. By minimizing handling, we prevent bruising and deformation of our products. Whether you are a parent, weekend warrior, or artisan chef, you will love cooking with some of best quality vegetables available in the Bluegrass. As part of our blog, we'll be sharing seasonal recipes for using our products as we move through the growing season. We've got some great ideas simmering for soups, omelettes, salsas, salads, and good old-fashioned favorites.
