This week on the Farm: Hope! ๐We watched 2 Documentaries this past week: Groundswell (about the hope in Regenerative farming worldwide) and one on Jane Goodall. Both gave us Hope that there is still a lot of good things going on and a lot of good people worldwide concerned about the same things we are.
1) Big Blue Sky!!
2,3,4,5,6) After the early rains in the week the cows created a mud hole. As we were moving them we noticed a newborn calf stuck in the mud. When trying to help get the calf out I got stuck also and had to leave one boot. The calf is good now! And I returned to dig out the boot!
7)The Meat chickens got moved out on the grass. It is always nice to have them out of the brooder and doing what chickens do, scratch, eat bugs and clover and fertilize the ground.
8 ) *video in comments* when our egg layers hear the golf cart they somehow know it is dinner time. And sometimes you have to take alternate routes to feed them ๐! In this
video you can see our Milkweed patch. We hope that it attracts Monarchs to come back. 10-15 years ago this field had many butterflies! We hope the numbers return
9) *video inn comments* we had 5 new calves this week. Having calves in this heat we've had is not the best. We lost 1 calf ( not sure what happened) and this calf was very weak so we had to supplement it with more milk. The late week drop in temperature helped and this calf is stronger!
10) I'm highlighting a product that we recommend. I gave up chewing Red Man many years ago, but a chaw of these pumpkin seeds are so good!
11,12) when we move the cows to a new field we have to move water tanks, sometimes we drag them by hand and sometimes we load them on the hay wagon. When you rotate the cows between 10-14 fields water is a challenge.
13) to wrap up the week we are a part of a Book study hosted by the Berry Center on Wendell Berry's popular book The Unsettling of America. It was written in the 70's but the issues are all the same today! This week the discussion was about the history of exploitation of the land, people and our resources. Today we are seeing it countrywide in massive losses of land, in data centers, warehouses and industrial Ag and the loss of community and culture. More to come!
