There are some horses who come into our lives and leave hoofprints so deep that a piece of our heart goes with them when they leave. Today, our hearts are shattered as we say goodbye to our sweet Heather yesterday. đ
Heather was so much more than a horse. She was our swing mare, and she was Lamar and Emilyâs cart mare. She truly loved having a job to doâwhether she was hitched, helping around the barn, or simply supervising in hopes that a sweet treat might come her way.
For me, Heather was the mare who made a little girlâs dreams of learning more about driving come true. She taught me how to drive horses, and through every lesson and every mile, she always took care of me and kept me safe. I trusted her completely, and that is a gift I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
Heather had a personality all her own. She loved her scratches, loved her people, and could always make us smile when she would stand in the big mud puddle during turnout, blowing bubbles and playing in the water. Those little things that once seemed so ordinary are now some of the memories we will treasure the most.
She was a teacher in more ways than one. Over the years, Heather helped teach many young mares how to be better horsesâshowing them patience, confidence, and how the job was supposed to be done. She was steady, dependable, kind, and so very special.
And perhaps it was fitting that Heather carried a star on her forehead, because she truly was a shining star in our lives. â
There will never be another Heather. The barn will feel quieter without her, the hitch will feel different, and there will always be an empty place where she belonged. But what a privilege it was to love her, learn from her, and have her be part of our lives.
Thank you, Heather, for every safe mile, every lesson, every laugh, every dream you helped make come true, and every memory you gave us.
Run free, sweet girl. Find Charolette and Bailey and tell them we miss them. You are loved and cherished beyond measure.
Our shining star will be missed more than words could ever say. âđ¤
