The shell carries minerals like calcium carbonate, which helps create the perfect environment for young oysters to bond and begin building their own shells. Old shells also release natural chemical signals into the water that tell larvae:
โThis is a safe place to grow.โ
In places like the Puget Sound, shells are often returned to beaches, tide flats, or setting tanks because they help rebuild oyster populations, protect shorelines, improve water quality, and strengthen entire ecosystems. An adult oyster can filter large amounts of water each day, so every shell that grows new oysters creates environmental value far beyond money.
